The literature review is an opportunity to demonstrate not just the breadth of your reading, but also your critical reponse to the current literature on a topic. This workshop is designed for students writing a standalone literature review, or undertaking a literature review as part of their dissertation. The session is also suitable for students who are not required to include a literature review chapter, but who will be engaging with existing research throughout their dissertations.

Qualitative methodologies are becoming increasingly important in our discipline. Because they are based on techniques that technical communicators commonly use, everyone in the profession finds these methods familiar and understandable. This workshop will draw on that familiarity and comprehension to show practitioners how to analyze and interpret the data collected from interviews, focus groups, open-ended questionnaires, and communication artifacts. The workshop is based on simple, proven methods that produce meaningful results that can be used to inform decisions about product design and delivery. First, the moderators will review examples of qualitative methods and data. Then, the moderators will explain how to organize data for analysis. Finally, the moderators will describe Content Analysis, a technique for analyzing and interpreting the data. With this background, participants will work in teams to analyze and interpret data using Content Analysis. Then, the teams will report the results of their analysis and interpretation.

SAGE Research Methods Understanding and Evaluating Research: A Critical Guide Author: Sue L. T. McGregor Pub. Date: 2019 Product: SAGE Research Methods DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.4135/9781071802656 Methods: Theory, Research questions, Mixed methods Disciplines: Anthropology, Education, Geography, Health, Political Science and International Relations, Psychology, Social Policy and Public Policy, Social Work, Sociology Access Date: January 11, 2023 Publishing Company: SAGE Publications, Inc City: Thousand Oaks Online ISBN: 9781071802656 © 2019 SAGE Publications, Inc All Rights Reserved. Overview of Research Design and Methods Learning Objectives • Distinguish between methodology, method, and research design • Compare and contrast research design as logical and as logistical • Appreciate the difference between reconstructed logic (quantitative) and logic-in-use (qualitative), es- pecially an emergent research design • Explain the five logics of mixed methods research designs • Appreciate the link between research inquiry and research design • Describe the purpose and importance of the Methods section of a research report • Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative intellectual inquiries • Identify the major reporting components (subheadings) of qualitative and quantitative research re- ports • Compare and contrast the most agreed-to approaches and terms about research integrity, rigor, and quality that are used in each of the three methodologies, and learn the attendant strategies to meet the standard for the specific research methodology Introduction This chapter focuses on the constructs of research design and the Methods section in a research paper. Re- search design is a larger construct than methods, to be explained shortly. But within a research paper, once the authors have stated the research question, developed an introduction to the study, and presented a re- view of the literature (and maybe a theoretical framework), their next step is to provide a description of the strategies used to collect and analyze data pursuant to the research question—that is, their methods. This chapter provides a generic discussion of methods, followed with much more detail in Chapter 9 (qualitative methods) and in Chapter 10 (quantitative and mixed methods). As a caveat, a detailed discussion of how to use specific methods is beyond the scope of this overview chap- ter, or even this book. There is no attempt to explain how to do a survey, conduct a scientific experiment, pre- pare a case study, or engage in ethnographic research where researchers immerse themselves in the lives of the participants. That being said, the general discussions in Chapters 9 (qualitative) and 10 (quantitative and SAGE © 2018 by SAGE Publications, Inc. SAGE Research Methods Page 2 of 27 Understanding and Evaluating Research: A Critical Guide mixed methods) will address the basic conventions pursuant to preparing, conducting, and reporting these t.

Research has been very interesting discipline to scholars and researchers for the past decades, but now new researchers and even final year students might find it difficult because their experience towards it may be very limited even thought they are expected to do and present their final project proposals. The fact remains that, research is so interesting and exciting subject, all you need is to be interested your area of research, select good topic and be ready to contribute.

Develop three research questions on a topic for which you are most interest. Access the "Types of Research Design" site. Select the appropriate research design for your research questions. In your own words, explain the purpose of the design, what these type of studies tell you and what they don't tell you and. Finally, explain why this design is appropriate for the respective research questions. A research question is a... clear focused concise complex arguable Instructions for all Forums: Each week, learners will post one initial post per week. This post must demonstrate comprehension of the course materials, the ability to apply that knowledge in the real world. Learners will engage with the instructor and peers throughout the learning week. To motivate engaged discussion, posts are expected to be on time with regular interaction throughout the week. All posts should demonstrate college level writing skills. To promote vibrant discussion as we would in a face to face classroom, formatted citations and references are not required. Quotes should not be used at all, or used sparingly. If you quote a source quotation marks should be used and an APA formatted citation and reference provided. Before beginning your paper, you need to decide how you plan to design the study . The research design refers to the overall strategy that you choose to integrate the different components of the study in a coherent and logical way, thereby, ensuring you will effectively address the research problem; it constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data. Note that your research problem determines the type of design you should use, not the other way around! De Vaus, D. A. Research Design in Social Research . London: SAGE, 2001; Trochim, William M.K. Research Methods Knowledge Base . 2006. General Structure and Writing Style The function of a research design is to ensure that the evidence obtained enables you to effectively address the research problem logically and as unambiguously as possible . In social sciences research, obtaining information relevant to the research problem generally entails specifying the type of evidence needed to test a theory, to evaluate a program, or to accurately describe and assess meaning related to an observable phenomenon. With this in mind, a common mistake made by researchers is that they begin their investigations far too early, before they have thought critically about what information is required to address the research problem. Without attending to these design issues beforehand, the overall research problem will not be adequately addressed and any conclusions drawn will run the risk of being weak and unconvincing. As a consequence, the overall validity of the study will be undermined. The length and complexity of describing research designs in your paper can vary considerably, but any well-developed design will achieve the following : Identify the res ...

This study applied text mining methods to examine the abstracts of 2,997 international research articles published between 2000 and 2010 by six journals included in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) in the field of Educational Technology (EDTECH). A total of 19 clusters of research areas were identified, and these clusters were further analyzed in terms of productivity by country and by journal. The analysis revealed research areas with rising trends, stable status, and low attention. This study also identified areas of research emphasis by journal and research strength by country. A discussion of results through the lens of Critical Theory of Technology is also included. The authors hope to inform the EDTECH community about the trends of EDTECH research on topics and regions of research contributions. The authors also believe that such examination of trends can help facilitate fruitful discussions of directions for future research, and possible international collaboration across various geographical regions.

During the presentation, I will share how I supported a national-winning team of middle school students to develop their STEM-related mobile app through on-site training and other virtual scaffolding mechanism. I will discuss the tips, challenges, and lessons learned based on my reflection as a computing educator. This presentation should provide practical information that can be applied to other contexts of computing education as it involves various aspects that are commonly relevant, such as project management, communication, and technical consideration during app development. I hope my sharing of the rewarding experiences with the community can help encourage more quality educators and App Inventor enthusiasts to consider applying to join App Inventor Training Corp. (AITC), and serve the common goals of contributing to computing education through this venue. (Learn more about: 2014 Verizon Innovative App Challenge at http://appchallenge.tsaweb.org/)

This chapter provides a review of the theoretical bases and international research on the uses of Web 2.0 applications for learning through collaboration. Web 2.0 applications empower users with a venue for personal expression, sharing, communicating, and collaborating with others, thus offering enriched opportunities for learning. In our review, we found evidence of engaging and effective uses of Web 2.0 applications such as blogs, wikis, collaborative documents and concept mapping, VoiceThread, video sharing applications (e.g., YouTube), microblogging (e.g., Twitter), social networking sites, and social bookmarking that applied contemporary and foundational educational theory. We also identified opportunities and challenges associated with learning through collaboration with Web 2.0 applications, which can inform research directions and areas to explore for ECT researchers.
