Andres Bonifacio initially joined La Liga Filipina which aimed for peaceful revolution, but founded the more radical Katipunan after Rizal's arrest and exile. Bonifacio believed that a violent revolution was needed to free the Filipino people from Spanish colonial rule. His philosophy emphasized that it was the colonized Filipinos versus the colonizing Spanish, not between the government and governed. He advocated focusing the revolutionary movement on addressing the suffering of the Filipino people to rapidly expand membership.
