1. What is NPQ to You?
NPQ is a source of information on non-profit, philanthropy and emergent issues in civil society more
generally. Online it tracks trends in policy, philanthropy, and practice so that your work will be fully
informed and thus more powerful. It also provides up to date rigorous articles on management and
governance that keep pace with changing 21st century realities.
Collaborative Journalism
NPQ is a collaborative journalism website. NPQ chose a collaborative journalism model out of a deep
respect for the intelligence and discernment of its readership and a commitment to reflect our interest in
collective action in our practice as journalists.
Collaborative journalism uses information contributed by numerous individuals and organizations to
build news stories and analysis. This can happen over a period of time as a story evolves and it may
involve a mix of lay and professional contributors. Information may be gathered through research or
reporting, or added when readers examine, comment and build upon existing stories. Stories from the
mainstream media are often built upon. A single collaborative news story, therefore, may encompass
multiple authors, varying articles, and a range of perspectives.
Successful collaborative journalism requires a participatory community with respect for its content. NPQ’s
editorial staff curates that content and is available to ensure that editorial standards are met such that the
site remains a high-quality setting for this most serious of collective endeavors: the documentation and
intellectual nourishment of a new era of citizen activism.
