On Sep 17th Catalyst brought a panel of academic and industry thought leaders for a lively discussion on the issue of data reproducibility in academic research. Moderated by Cathy Tralau-Stewart, head of the Therapeutics track of the Catalyst Awards, the panel explored causes and potential solutions for a problem that has been receiving national attention in both scientific and popular media. Panelists included Keith Yamamoto, Vice Chancellor for Research at UCSF; Larry Tabak, Principle Deputy Director, NIH; John Ioannidis, Professor of Health Research Policy at Stanford School of Medicine; Elizabeth Iorns, Co-Founder, Science Exchange; Parker B. Funding agencies, universities, and research institutes all face challenges of reliably identifying their researchers and monitoring outcomes over time. All researchers—and especially early career researchers seeking to establish their careers—need to be reliably connected to their research outputs, without the confusion common, changeable names creates. Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers supported by grants also have specific challenges: if they are not the PI, they are not included in grant information; they may not even know which grant(s) they are supported by; and as a result, the existing challenges of reliably tying publications to grant funding are even more problematic. The use of the unique, persistent ORCID identifier can help support outcomes tracking and evaluation. In 2012, the U.S. National Institutes of Health Biomedical Research Workforce Working Group made recommendations that the NIH should take to support a sustainable biomedical research workforce in the U.S. In the course of its study, working group members were “frustrated and sometimes stymied” by the lack of quality, comprehensive data about biomedical researchers. In response, NIH has recommended the development of a simple, comprehensive tracking system for trainees, implemented a shared, voluntary researcher profile system called the Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv), and encouraged the adoption of unique, persistent ORCID identifiers for researchers. Additionally, NIH has begun collecting data about individuals in graduate and undergraduate student project roles who are supported by NIH grants. Research universities like Texas A&M are also responding by incorporating the ORCID identifier into their systems, enabling the improved identification, data collection, and career outcome tracking of students and postdoctoral researchers--and educating these early career researchers about the benefits they will receive from a unique, persistent research identifier. They are also beginning to link Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) to early career researchers' ORCID records. ORCID is an independent, non-profit organization that provides an open registry of unique and persistent identifiers for researchers and scholars. ORCID collaborates with the community to integrate ORCID identifiers into research systems and workflows, improving data management and accuracy across systems. ORCID enables interoperability between research systems worldwide, ensuring that researchers are correctly and automatically linked to their contributions. Since its launch in October 2012, ORCID has seen rapid adoption by more than 670,000 researchers and 130+ member organizations. Open Access is, arguably, one of the most disruptive changes to the scholarly communications environment since the invention of the internet. Staff in academic and research libraries have been facilitating this change and educating researchers about it since the first institutional repository was launched in 2000. But the pace of change has accelerated exponentially with the strengthening of the RCUK and Wellcome Trust mandates and the introduction of the HEFCE mandate among other funder moves in this area. This talk will focus on the practical responses taken by the University of Warwick to cope with this change in all areas across the institution and the demands that this has placed on Library staff. It will focus on the Library perspective but also cover work done by the Research Office as well as the Graduate School and Student, Careers and Skills as part of a cross-institutional response. It will examine the practical challenges that we have faced in dealing with the new policies and some of the developments we have made to our institutional repository, WRAP (http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk) to support researchers wanting the advantages of open access. Additionally it will cover new areas of activity that have been undertaken by Library staff and offer a few of our ‘lessons learnt’ as well as a few future plans. Finally the talk will discuss some of the early results from an institution wide survey of our researchers on their understanding of open access and attitudes to the process. This survey is an expansion of a survey that we ran in 2011 and the results will show whether or not the rapid changes and stronger funder mandates are really helping to win the hearts and minds of our researchers.

In 1989, the Havasupai Tribe asked an anthropologist at Arizona State University for help in figuring out whether genetics might be contributing to its high rate of diabetes mellitus. The anthropologist recruited a geneticist (who was also interested in schizophrenia) to lead the study. The rest of the story is disputed. Was only diabetes research mentioned when members of the tribe allowed ASU investigators to collect blood samples or did the Havasupai understand that other questions could be studied when they provided consent for research on “the causes of behavioral/medical disorders”? The researchers determined that the genetic link to diabetes found in another tribe did not exist among the Havasupai, but other ASU researchers who used the samples published papers about alcoholism, mental illness and the tribe’s migration from Asia (thus contradicting the tribe’s core beliefs about its origins). After seven years of litigation, the suit brought by the tribe in 2003 was finally settled with ASU apologizing, paying $700,000 to 41 of the Havasupai, returning the blood specimens to the tribe, and agreeing to prevent any further research based on information derived from the materials. This forum will explore such issues as: -What was the meaning of the consent that the Havasupai provided? -What should subjects be told about future research with anonymized samples? What can we tell them? -What are the interests of the tribe (distinct from its members’ interests) and how can and should they be protected? -What are the implications of the ASU-Havasupai case for physician-investigators conducting community-based research in a diverse urban setting like Los Angeles?
