With the rapid growth of social networking sites influencing education, policy makers and educators face numerous challenges in order to meet the growing demands and expectations of the learners. Our learners are born and brought up with technology and they expect the same life style in their education system. As educators, we must recognize the potential for ameliorating student engagement inside and outside the classroom using these technologies. Facebook has been used as a tool in education throughout the world. With many of its advantages in the daily life of our students, there are many risks involved in it. Edmodo, on the other hand, is purely a personal learning network (PLN) developed by educators with education in mind. It has a similar interface to Facebook and is free of charge, it is easy to create the account or a classroom, and has simple functionality. It is very safe since an educator can limit who may join the group; i.e. students are invited explicitly. This professional development workshop explores the numerous ways in which Edmodo can be an ideal tool for meeting the ever-growing challenges to support student motivation and participation inside and outside the classroom. It is a short result-based training course adapted to meet the needs of 21st century teachers who wish to acquire new skills or enhance their competencies in real-time situation.

Need for Personal Learning Networks in the 21st Century

Community and technical colleges are increasingly advocating for open educational practices and policies to fulfill their open access mission. Affordability can be a significant access barrier for the high percentage of non-traditional students at community college. Non-traditional students often work to support themselves and family members while they attend college. As funding cuts have lead to higher tuition costs, many are unable to afford the expensive instructional materials. Faculty have responded by adopting open educational resources (OER) and open textbooks to make college more affordable for their students. In the process, they are improving instructional practices as they customize materials to meet the unique needs of students at their college. A focus on online and interactive materials and regional workforce education has been noted. College administrators and trustees noting these successes are proposing open policies to encourage the use of OER in an increasing number of disciplines and in district-wide implementations. Hear case studies from members of the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) at OCWC on how adoption and creation of OER and open textbooks has improved affordability and teaching practice. Faculty at College of the Canyons in Sociology, Water Technology, and statistics have created and adopted OER and open textbooks saving students $235,000 over a single year. An OER repository and a flexible infrastructure for supporting the sharing of faculty developed learning objects has been developed. Their Dean of Distance Education leads the CCCOER Advisory Board representing the consortium at conferences throughout the world. Maricopa District, one of the largest community college districts in the U.S., has endorsed “the development and use of OER to support innovative and creative opportunities for all learners,” in its 5-year District-Wide Information and Instructional Technology Strategic Plan. Math faculty at three of the district colleges: Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and Phoenix are sharing resources and strategies to provide multiple sections of high-enrollment math courses using OER. Pilots of OER math at three additional Maricopa community colleges will begin in Spring 2013. Scottsdale College alone has saved students over $200,000 in fall 2012. CCCOER was founded in the Foothill–De Anza College District to create awareness and build a community of practice around OER at public two-year colleges. As proof of concept, the Collaborative Statistics textbook was openly licensed and imported into the Connexions repository at Rice University. The textbook was widely adopted by math faculty at De-Anza college and 20 other colleges in North America and has saved students at De-Anza over a million dollars to date.

Espinosa Ramírezb La capnografía es una monitorización no invasiva complementaria a la pulsioximetría, ya que esta valora la oxigenación, y mediante la capnografía se analiza la ventilación del paciente, midiendo el dióxido de carbono exhalado. Además, puede valorar la perfusión y el metabolismo del paciente en algunos casos. La capnografía se emplea desde hace más de 30 años para monitorizar al paciente intubado en el quirófano, donde es estándar de atención. El avance tecnológico ha permitido desarrollar capnógrafos portátiles fáciles de usar que ofrecen lecturas precisas tanto en pacientes intubados como con ventilación espontánea. Estos capnógrafos se están empezando a emplear en los servicios de emergencia médica (SEM) de España en los últimos años. La presente revisión bibliográfica ofrece una visión actual de la capnografía para colaborar en la formación de los profesionales sanitarios en esta monitorización de la ventilación que se encuentra en pleno surgimiento en los SEM españoles.

Digital literacies are a critical aspect of being an active and engaged member of 21st century society, and it is important to provide English as a second language (ESL) speakers with opportunities to develop their digital literacies in English. However, pedagogy and content specifically focusing on digital literacies are routinely lacking in initial ESL teacher training. Compounding this is that in-service ESL teacher professional learning is often not focused on digital literacies or does not adequately consider the specific contextual constraints and sensitivities that in-service ESL teachers face. Therefore, a professional learning course that is focused on digital literacies and personalised to individual ESL teacher contexts is needed in order to address this gap. This paper discusses the need for in-service ESL teacher training on digital literacies and presents the nascent development of a framework that will be used to deliver personalised online professional learning (POPL) that addresses these needs. The framework incorporates four critical aspects of effective professional learning: personalisation, social constructivism, situatedness, and extended time frames.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2015, iNACOL presented a Leadership Webinar featuring Karl Nelson and Jennifer Wolfe of the K-12 OER Collaborative in celebration of Open Education Week 2015. The K–12 OER Collaborative is an initiative led by a group of 12 states working to create comprehensive, high-quality, open educational resources (OER) supporting K–12 mathematics and English language arts that are aligned with state learning standards and leverage technology and provide digital content to students. The webinar explains the project, and talks about the Collaborative’s vision for ensuring that the materials created are high quality and flexible in order to meet the needs of students and educators.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
