FIGHTING PLAGIARISM
SINCE 1941!
2. WHY cite sources?
It gives credit to the authors of the sources you
have used.
It gives you, the writer, authority over your
subject matter.
It is the ethical and legal way to use
information and avoids plagiarism.
3. WHEN cite sources?
NEED TO CITE
- Any information you borrow from another source
- Data, statistics, a full quotation, a general concept… anything you
read in a book, periodical article, textbook; heard or saw in a class
lecture, TV show, interview, web site, or elsewhere.
- Direct quotation
- Paraphrased information
(ideas you put into your own words)
DO NOT NEED TO CITE
- Common knowledge - information that is so
well-known, you can find it in numerous sources
- Your completely original opinion - not an argument borrowed form
someone else
When in doubt,
CITE!
4. In May 2015, Marvel
started the “A-Force,” a
new comic book
featuring female heroes,
with She-Hulk as their
leader.
Paraphrasing

still have to cite the source!

6. Can you tell?
Look at the sample essay written by Stuart (Stu) Dent. It’s written pretty well… but it’s missing lots of citations
for his sources.
Where does he paraphrase information?
Where does he quote exact words?
Where does he need to add citations?

10. In-text citations done!
But you’re not.
Any time you quote or paraphrase information in a project, you also need to include full citation information about
the source in your bibliography.
For MLA style, that’s called the list of Works Cited.
Next, we’ll review some rules of putting together the Works Cited list. Look at the bibliography for Stu Dent’s
essay. What mistakes need to be fixed?
13. Have questions or need help?
