The founding board
LORI BECK DONOVAN has been an attorney with the United States Patent
and Trademark Office in Alexandria, VA since her graduation from The George
Washington University School of Law in the late 1990s. In addition to setting a
record as the youngest person promoted to managing attorney, Lori’s civil service
career has stretched her areas of expertise to include recruitment, hiring, career
development, and strategic planning and forecasting in addition to trademark law.
Her latest responsibilities — educating the general public about Trademark Office
processes and training examining attorneys about legal procedures and policies
as well as IT resources — dovetail with Hayven::org’s role as an educational nonprofit.
Lori’s board role with Hayven::org is corporate secretary. Due to her employee devel-
opment and communications experience, she will play a lead role in hiring and
managing our employees, interns and volunteers. Lori lives in the Palisades
neighborhood of Washington, DC with her husband, two sons, and three rescue
dogs.
Board of
directors
CAROLE SCHABOW left finance giant The Capital Group Companies in Los
Angeles to enact the entrepreneurial dream motivating her since her breast cancer
diagnosis in 2004: To streamline information and resources to help others navi-
gate through cancer treatment and beyond with as much ease and buoyancy
as possible. In retrospect, her interests in trending, design, and health com-
bined with her multidisciplinary career path have prepped her for Hayven::org.
From her seven years in Corporate Communications at Capital to her three years
at The White House through decades of experience as a writer and an editor in
print, online and for TV, Carole is primed for her role as Hayven’s content guru
and editor-in-chief. Her exposure to fundamentals of finance, business development
and HR benefits administration are likewise all at play in her capacity as president and
chief strategist. Carole divides her time between California and Washington, DC and
enjoys finding off-the-radar music, movies, and byways.

Board of directors
CHRISTINE MANTEL’s leadership and people skills were both evident
early in her career. During her years with America West Airlines in Washington,
D.C., she was the youngest shift supervisor at Reagan National Airport and, in
her role as Regional Employee Representative for its East Coast cities, she ad-
vocated on behalf of employees with senior executives and the airline owners,
a position she earned by a vote among her peers. Later, at the Pacific Cataract
and Laser Institute in Washington State, Christine coordinated its physician
outreach program, organized its continuing education programs for doctors,
and tended to patients as a licensed ophthalmic technician. In 2005, Christine
joined American Funds in Phoenix. Within 2 years, she was offered an interim
team manager role and continues to supervise and train teams. She was recruit-
ed by Corporate Communications as a reporter (one of her articles was a record-
holder on the company intranet for most Likes) and she serves on the Activities
Council, a leadership group that coordinates charitable events to aid the local
community. For one annual drive for the homeless, Christine tripled donation
amounts over the prior 2 years, inspiring her general manager to say, “I wish I could clone
you!” In early 2014, Christine was elected to the Hayven’s board after two active years on
the Business Advisory Board. She is assuming the role of Treasurer and will have a lead role,
with Carole, in financial stewardship and major gifts. As the daughter of an Army officer,
Christine grew up among diverse cultures and regards her high school years in Munich,
Germany as a peak personal experience.
OUR VISION
Hayven is changing the cancer conversation
by developing and sharing engaging hope-
based new media resources that leverage
the collective wisdom of those who’ve already
been there, connecting cancer survivors
and co-survivors to each other and to best-of
resources as they navigate through cancer
treatment and beyond.
