GREENSBURG – Employees and clients of the Greensburg branch of
Developmental Services Incorporated (DSI) recently held a fundraiser to bring in
money for their Relay for Life team, DSI & Friends.
The pig kissing contest was developed during a leadership meeting to discuss
fundraising options. During a two week period, employees and clients at DSI
brought in spare change and donated it to one of four buckets. Each bucket
corresponded to a member of the DSI Greensburg leadership team. Whoever
collected the most money at the end of the two weeks would have to kiss a pig.
The good-natured participants were Carla Linville, DSI Industry Manager; Chris
Ramey, DSI Employment Specialist; Lori Ruble, DSI Production Supervisor; and
Jenny Maddux, DSI Day Program Manager.
Two DSI clients and another employee counted the money from the buckets. The
final totals were tallied and Jenny Maddux won by a landslide. As of the day of
the pig kissing, Maddux had raised $15, Ruble raised $8.75, Linville raised $1.35,
and Ramey raised $0.72. It became clear that the employees and clients at DSI
wanted Jenny Maddux to kiss that pig.
Though a pig was originally lined up for the event, the first pig’s appearance fell
through. Chris Ramey contacted Minis n More, a company that raises and sells
micro mini teacup piglets, to see if they were interested in bringing a pig to be
kissed. They agreed and Cristi from Minis n More made the three hour drive to
the DSI office in Greensburg with an adorable pot-bellied pig for Maddux to kiss.
Minis n More attended the event at no cost to DSI, allowing them to use all the
collected money for the relay team.
Maddux was a great sport, waiting for all employees and clients to assemble and
get a good view before kissing the pig. When pictures failed to capture the kiss
itself, Maddux leaned in slowly, allowing everyone with a camera a chance to
snap a picture. The well behaved pig was the center of attention for several
minutes as clients and employees took turns viewing the animal.
“It’s great to see a company come together like this for a cause as wonderful as
the Relay for Life. We are a non profit ourselves, but we like to help others, too.
The clients were very involved and excited about this fundraiser,” said Chris
Ramey.
All of the money raised will go to the DSI & Friends Relay for Life team to help
raise money for the 2014 event. Anyone wishing to donate to the DSI & Friends
Relay for Life team can do so at www.relayforlife.orgor at the DSI office, which is
located at 1015 North Michigan Avenue. Any donations would be very much
appreciated.
