DIRECTED LEARNING
Emilio Valdivia
AET/531

Dr. Sean Spear
INTRODUCTION
• Self-Directed Learners
• Questions for Adult Learners about course and
questions to encourage in depth responses.
• An analysis questioning techniques.
• Current system of questioning.
• Problem-based learning.
• Summary of questioning techniques.
• How assignment promotes self-directed
learning.
QUESTIONS ABOUT COURSE
Five Basic Questions
• What is self-directed
learning?
• What are Web 2.0 tools?
• What are Social Networking
sites?
• What are Information
feeds?
• What are Virtual
Collaborative Sites?
Five Rewritten Questions
• How can self-directed learning
help students and instructors?
• How can Web 2.0 technologies
enhance learning?
• What social networking sites
are useful for instructors and
students to share information?
• How can information feeds
build collaboration skills for
students?
• How can virtual sites help the
instructor and students to
communicate?
AN ANALYSIS OF QUESTIONING
TECHNIQUES TO SUPPORT LEARNING
• Ask important questions in chat room or
on a discussion board.
• Ask questions that require higher order
thinking skills.
• Challenge students to explain viewpoints.
• Pose questions that are open-ended.
• Questions help students to become
engaged.
CHALLENGES INHERENT IN THE
CURRENT SYSTEM OF QUESTIONING
• Questions lead students to
offer personal opinions.
• Questions lead to life
experiences.
• Challenge for instructor
includes obtaining thinking
skills from students.
• Questions should require
students to do research to
obtain information.
• Questions should
challenge students to
quote scholarly authors.
CONNECT QUESTIONING TO PROBLEM-
BASED LEARNING
• Identify topics.
• Map out concepts.
• Meet state standards.
• Generate outcomes
and objectives.
• Design problematic
scenarios.
• Formulate strategies.
• Use problematic
scenarios.
SUMMARY WHY SOUND QUESTIONING
TECHNIQUES SUPPORT INDEPENDENT
LEARNING
• Student participation occurs as questions are widely
distributed.
• High level cognitive questions help to stimulate
learning.
• Student understanding increases.
• Student thinking is stimulated, directed, and
extended.
• feedback and appropriate reinforcement occur.
• Critical thinking abilities are developed.
• Student creativity.
HOW THIS ASSIGNMENT PROMOTES
SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING
• Assignment helps students
to become engaged.
• Adults need to take
responsibility of learning.
• Assignment encourages
students to become critical
thinkers.
• Student shares his or her in
depth knowledge about
self-directed learning.
• Student is motivated to
complete assignment.

Notas del editor

  1. Hello, my name is Emilio Valdivia. I will do a presentation on how questions can help to promote self-directed learning.
  2. For adults to become self-directed learners it is important that adults have the desire to learn. Adults will need to become lifelong learners and develop skills to enhance their learning. The adult learners will need motivation, set goals, and prepare themselves to learn. The presentation will contain basic questions that could be asked to adult learners regarding the course. Additional questions can engage adults in the learning process and will help to stimulate learning. The presentation will also include an analysis of questioning techniques, illustrate current system of questioning, summarize questioning techniques, and the presentation will include information on how the assignment promotes self-directed learning.
  3. Instructors need to ask important questions to help guide adults with learning. Basic questions can help the instructor to obtain feedback about student knowledge. In order to help students to become self-directed learners it is important that instructors ask in depth questions to help students to use critical thinking skills, and elicit thoughts or ideas from students as well as different perspectives about real world problems. According to Lowes, The goal of an online program should be to provide an environment which actively engages students in the learning process and promotes independent learning where students take ownership of their work. The role of instructors shifts, placing more emphasis on facilitation where the instructor provides the structure for the course with scheduled assignments and due dates, and guidelines on how to complete assignments (Lowes, 2005).
  4. Instructors that have success have the ability to find ways to engage students with the learning process. Instructors can ask important questions to stimulate learning. Instructors can ask questions in the chat room or on discussion boards. Instructors can ask questions that require students to use higher order thinking skills. Instructors can also use techniques such as challenging students to explain viewpoints, ask open-ended questions, and ask questions that can engage students with learning process.
  5. The challenges for instructors in the current system include stimulating participation and guided students to become accountable of their own learning. Questions lead students to answer questions using experiences and opinions. It is important for instructors to ask challenging questions that can help to engage students, require students to use critical thinking skills, require students to research work, and require students to quote scholarly authors.
  6. According to Bellanca, it is important to develop a curriculum that can connect questioning to problem-based learning (Bellanca,2010). The important steps will help instructors to formulate questions for students. The process will help the instructor to clarify how teachers should organize their problem solving questions.
  7. Sound questioning can support student participation and can help to stimulate learning in the online classroom. High level questions help the instructor to stimulate learning for adults. Student understanding increases when instructors ask questions. Questions will also help students to stimulate thinking, can help creativity, and feedback can help to reinforce learning for students.
  8. The assignment can help students to understand what it takes to become an effective on line instructor. Instructors will need to ask questions that can engage students with learning. Through guided instruction instructors can help students to take ownership of their own learning. The assignment can help students to become critical thinkers. In depth questioning can provoke students to share knowledge with instructor as well as collaborate information with other students. The assignment can also help students to become motivated to complete assignments.
  9. In conclusion it is important to have questions to help promote self-directed learning. The instructor will need to have appropriate questions that can engage the adult learner, solicit critical thinking, and challenge students to provide opinions and idea on discussion topics.
