In another first for the MIA, a large scale study never previously attempted has collected regionally specific feedback from students. Year 11 and 12 students were targeted, with the data revealing that students do know what they want and are gaining valuable skills and experience to prepare for study and work on completion of school. 347 students participated in the ‘School to Work’ online survey conducted late last year in a partnership brokered by GetSet Partnership Brokers. Partners were Leeton and Griffith Councils, six secondary schools in Leeton and Griffith; and three Central Schools - Hillston, Ardlethan and Barellan - because they are in the Griffith and Leeton LGA job catchment areas. Introduction
Why do a survey of Year 11 and 12 students?
There were a number of reasons for conducting a School to Work survey for the Griffith, Leeton and
surrounding schools, targeting senior students. Whilst each individual school would generate basic
exit data on year 11 and 12 students, and Government Departments concerned with youth regularly
conduct surveys on youth employment, there is a lack of data at a regional and micro level to
attempt to understand at what concentration students are actively engaged in work outside of
school.
Leeton and Griffith Councils, in a partnership brokered by GetSet, undertook to do a comprehensive,
large scale survey, which aims to:
• Ascertain the existing skillsets/qualifications students currently have attained
• Assist schools to guide students towards their strengths, and short and long term goals
• Assist Councils in understanding how school aged youth contribute to the local economy
• Assist Councils to determine students short and long term plans in relation to training and work
• Assist GetSet Partnership Brokers to bring Education and Industry together in relevant
partnerships
• Assist training / apprenticeship organisations
• Ensure students’ ideas about their future direction is reflected and available for regional bodies
which may need to identify or access School to Work demographics
There were six main parts to the survey, which sought to identify:
• What skill sets/qualifications students will need to become work ready
• The existing skillsets/qualifications students have already attained
• Students’ short term goals in relation to work, study, travel or a combination of all
• How much paid/volunteer work students undertake a week and how this contributes to their
employability/the local economy/developing their skills in the workplace
• How many students would consider returning to their home town after experiencing life, work,
study and travel
• What industries students are planning to work/study in
• How focussed students are on their plans for study and work pathways
347 students from 9 schools in Leeton and Griffith, and smaller schools in the job catchment area -
Hillston, Ardlethan and Barellan Central Schools - took part in an online survey.
Not all students completed all questions, which caused some unavoidable margin for error, but all
conclusions were determined as a percentage of the responses to that question for consistency of
results.

Of those surveyed 97 were 16 years of age, 190 were 17 years, 12 were 18, and 2 were 19 years old.
Of the students who completed the gender part of the survey, 128 were male and 171 were female.
It is intended that this will be the first School to Work Survey, and with the cooperation of the
schools involved, will develop and evolve to follow important trends and changes over time. This
will enable decision making for the youth of our region to be more relevant and effective, not simply
based on personal impressions or limited anecdotal evidence.
It gives our region’s youth an important voice in the community whereby their intentions are taken
seriously, and both schools and local government have critical data on which to rely.
This is a small but vital partnership between Schools and Local Government which will grow to
become an annual survey whereby all parties are able to extract information relevant to their areas
of interest, and map the changing student demographics for the benefit of our local communities.
Schools are busy places, yet have generously contributed, and we trust that this inaugural survey will
be the foundation establishing a solid indicative trend regarding the intentions of our region’s youth
population in their final school years.

Executive Summary
As a first survey, the information collated from the schools was quite mixed and emphasises the
different cultures within each school, which is largely determined by the social and economic
makeup of the school community.
As with all large scale projects, there are areas for improvement which will be addressed in future,
and the Survey results will form a benchmark for future comparison. The following conclusions have
been arrived at with honest and open intentions.
More than half the students surveyed have a job outside school hours, working more than 3 hours
per week, which is a significant statistic, when considering a proportion of respondents are limited
by attending boarding school.
Most of these are in occupations they do not see in their futures; they are being used to provide
income for independence, or developing skills and experience in becoming ‘work ready’. The
student demographic surveyed were using this exposure to transition to other work as they worked
towards, or were finishing their HSC.
Qualifications gained whilst at school demonstrate that schools are working towards the long term
financial and social well-being of the students. Schools and teachers are to be congratulated on this
result.
Students are generally happy that they will be prepared for work, from their perspective. This would
have been an interesting question to have posed to the employers of the students already in
employment, but this would be the topic for another survey project entirely.
Almost 3 out of 5 students intend leaving their home after schooling finishes,Q36
regardless of
undertaking tertiary education or work. They simply wish to go out into the world, and experience
life.
This is supported by Question 14 regarding taking the option of studying at a university if located
locally, where, without the qualification of what courses would be available, only 15% would choose
to remain in the area.
Further support for this conclusion came in the “seeking work in your home town instead of tertiary
education”,Q21
where 35% intended to leave, with 34% unsure. It may very well be that 32%
intending to stay in their home town is an excellent retention rate. Future surveys will allow a more
conclusive attestation.
The social fabric or culture of each school reflects very different results across the board and is
largely dependent and influenced by the social and economic demographic of each school.
Traineeships and apprenticeships are out of favour with the group surveyed, although taking a “gap”
year is becoming more popular, and this will be interesting to track as a trend in future.

The major challenge of the survey was the large number of responses to the category of “other” or
“unsure”, especially evidenced in which course they intend studying. This may have been
symptomatic of the enormous number of course choices available and will be investigated with
schools for future reference.
The impression given by the results as a whole is that the adage “kids nowadays don’t know what
they want” is certainly not true, but more that the greater range of choices to make has caused
decision making to be more challenging. This in turn has made selecting a single path for the future
increasingly difficult, and in the maturing minds of the students, perhaps cause for hesitation before
decision.
The results in detail are presented for your analysis and information in the following pages.
Individual School survey results will be distributed to each school for their own analysis.
The aim for the 2014 School to Work survey is to attempt to engage every year 11 and 12 student to
provide a more comprehensive result. From 2014 onwards, it is planned to do the survey in 2nd
term, after consultation and review with School Principals in order to ensure the survey questions
are relevant to all parties.

• The responses to this category were difficult to quantify, as they were much localised in
trend. The smaller populated locations provided more responses from farm or business.
Overall, 47% came from families who had a farm or business.
• Those from farms tended to want to return to the family farm/business more (11% Yes, 37%
Maybe) but as an overall assessment, most (56%) did not want to follow the family business.
• The number of students who are NOT going to return (56%) to the family business was over
half in most schools, or cluster of schools.
