2. Tenochtitlan (Mexico City)
The city of the Aztecs fell on
August 13, 1521.
Survivors were a few lords,
and most were children.
240,000 people died in
Tenochtitlan. The Aztec
empire collapsed, and Cortes
later became the governor
and captain-general of New
Spain in 1522.
Cortes’ ruler at the time was
Charles V of Spain who lived
in Europe, but still owned
New Spain.
3. New Spain
Once Cortes submitted
everything to the rule of
Spain, he also demanded
all Indians to convert into
Christianity.
He ordered the end of
human sacrifices and
encouraged new divinity
pictures to replace the
Indian idols.
Spaniards would on raids
looking for them and
killed many priests and
burned their idols
