Apolinario de la Cruz was a Filipino priest from Lucban, Quezon who led the first major revolt against the Spanish in 1841. He attempted to enter a monastic order in Manila but was denied due to his status as an indio. This led him to form a religious brotherhood that grew in size as the Spanish increased persecution of the group. De la Cruz was eventually captured, condemned for heresy, and executed by firing squad in Tayabas in November 1841.
