I am the head of the Human Resources department at Wells Fargo. We are
currently looking for an assistant manager for the publicity department. We’ve had
15 applicants, and I’ve narrowed it down to five. Since we are looking for someone
for the publicity department, searching their social media is a great way to get to
know the and their social media presence. The first candidate I searched was Jessica
Heetland. I discovered that she uses Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. I
also decided to search her name on Google to find out extra information about her.
My results are below.
I started by looking at Jessica’s Facebook page. I wasn’t sure what to expect
because I didn’t know much about her. First, I just looked at her page as a whole. I
didn’t see anything inappropriate or vulgar. She seemed to be tagged in a lot of
group photos or photos with her friends at various events. She doesn’t seem to post
many statuses or pictures herself. This tells me that she mainly uses her Facebook
account for pictures and keeping her family up-to-date with her life. Jessica’s
information is pretty vague; she seems to be careful about how much and what kind
of information she shares with the public. I noticed that she has her privacy settings
to “friends only”, which prevented me from seeing the majority of her pictures,
statuses, and information. Jessica seems to care about what kind of pictures and
content are posted to her Facebook, and this is an important quality to me. I
couldn’t find anything negative on her Facebook, but that’s not the last of her social
media pages.
The next page I decided to check out was her Instagram. Just by glancing, it
doesn’t look like she posts too many pictures to her page. She posts pictures of her

and her friends occasionally, and some of her and her family. There aren’t really
very many different actions a person can perform on an Instagram page besides
posting and liking pictures. Jessica has posted 242 photos to her Instagram page. I
took the time to look through them, and they are appropriate for the most part.
There are a couple of pictures I noticed that had some indication of inappropriate
behavior, but they were from a while back. Every picture on Instagram usually has
some sort of caption underneath it. I decided to go back through some of her
pictures and look at the captions instead of the pictures. The majority of Jessica’s
captions are positive. After looking at her own pictures, I decided to take a look at
the types of pictures that she likes. I thought this would be a good way to get to
know her, even though it might be informal. I saw that the pictures she likes come
mostly from the people she follows. Some of the pictures would be considered
inappropriate, but since they’re not displayed directly on her page, it isn’t a big deal.
Her Instagram presence is overall positive, too.
A big part of social media today is Twitter. Twitter can be used in all sorts of
ways. It can be used by coaches to let all their players know about practices just by
sending one tweet instead of multiple text messages, or it can be used solely for
personal reasons. Jessica has a twitter account with 10.3K tweets. I noticed that she
has her privacy settings turned on. This means that anyone who wishes to follow
her has to request to follow her and then she has to accept it. It also means that
anyone who isn’t following her can’t see her tweets or photos. This is a good idea
because she can ultimately control exactly who can and can’t see her tweets. I can’t
see anything on Jessica’s Twitter page except her profile photo and her cover photo

because I am not following her, and don’t really want her to know that I’m looking at
her social media, so I don’t want to request to follow her. Her profile photo is with
one of her friends and her cover photo is with a bigger group of friends. They book
look appropriate for being involved with our company.
I know that a lot of girls use Pinterest, so I decided to look up Jessica’s profile.
She seems to have the generic boards such as: quotes, food, piercings, tattoos, DIY,
and beauty. All of these boards are very common in the Pinterest world. Within
each board, there are pins. Jessica, and every other Pinterest user decides which
category each pin goes under. Jessica’s pins aren’t degrading or insulting. Most of
her pins are actually funny or meaningful quotes. Her account shows that she really
likes do-it-yourself projects, she loves trying new food, and she loves looking at new
piercing and tattoo ideas. She also likes to look at positive and uplifting quotes and
sayings. There are a lot of motivational quotes that are linked to her page, and that
shows that she likes to work hard and when she’s motivated to do something, she
goes and gets it done. This tells me that she is a go-getter and that she will do
whatever she has to do to succeed. She could easily start pinning products from our
company and it could help our business thrive. We could definitely use Jessica’s
Pinterest page to our advantage.
A person can dig up a lot of information about another person, just by
searching them on Google. I typed Jessica Heetland into the search bar and pressed
enter. I got several results from my Google search. A link to her Twitter Profile, her
Google+ profile, and her Instagram profile all show up. It looks like she played
softball fro Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn from 2011 to 2013 because the Quik Stats Iowa

link pops up on my search results page. A link to Jerry Heetland’s obituary pops up,
along with a picture of him. Several of Jessica’s old profile pictures pop up under the
images tab of my results. Some other pictures come up, and I recognized them from
some of her other social media pages. It was interesting to see what came up when I
searched Jessica’s name because it showed links from her past, such as her
grandfather’s obituary, and it also showed some things from her present lifestyle. I
think that since it shows things from her present lifestyle it is a good idea to search
possible employees on Google. If you don’t search them, you might not know
something about them that could be really important, such as the person being
involved with a scandal 20 years ago. Searching her name didn’t bring up any
negative pages or negative information that she would be associated with. Just by
looking Jessica up on Google, I learned more about her than by looking at four
different social media pages that she has accounts on.
After looking at Jessica’s social media presence, I’ve concluded that I’m going
to give her the job of assistant manager of the publicity department here at Wells
Fargo. I’m hoping that she can use her presence on social media to promote Wells
Fargo and everything we have to offer here. She has a large number of friends on
Facebook and followers on Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest that could be potential
money-makers for our company. Her friends and followers will like or share her
posts to their friends and that will make Wells Fargo’s offers and deals known the a
lot more people. It’s all about networking in the business world, after all. Many
employers are looking for this type of employee to take on the publicity challenges

that their companies have to offer. Jessica will give out positive information and
publicity for Wells Fargo, and I hope that she takes my offer.
