Most people now agree that climate change is a reality that requires decisive & affirmative action to clean up our act.I am not talking about the Boardroom though events in OLYMPUS & JP MORGAN would indicate there is something to be said about that too! However I am suggesting that perhaps it is time for companies & society to reflect upon the need to consider improving & cleaning up their act with respect to GHG emissions and reducing their carbon footprint.
According to former US Vice-President Al Gore we are out of time. In just three generations global warming and pollution will seriously effect the liveability of our environment. We need to act now!
So I would like to talk about these two major issues today -How can you save on energy and thus save your company money! How can you reduce emissions and help save the environment!I will show you how investing in an Energy Efficiency retrofit will give you the power to change your company’s bottom line, reduce emissions and to do your part in saving our planet.
So lets start with energy. Economic growth feeds on energy and the rapid economic growth inAsia has driven the demand for energy to rise sharply in theregion.
Since energy is still largely generated by using fossil fuels the cost of energy is only going to increase exponentially in the future. As a result governments and industry leaders are highly focused on creating sustainable and energy-efficient economies to help mitigate some of the rising cost of energy & climate change.Governments have also recognized that increasing the supply of renewable energy is only part of thesolution; the other half lies in constraining consumption through the adoption of energy efficiency measures because these are low in investment and show results almost immediately.
Having said that it’s no secret that buildings are going to be a central part of the puzzle. Buildings consume over 1/3 of global energy and cause 1/3 of Green House Gas emissions worldwide! BUTthey also provide some of the quickest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy use & carbon emissions.
InAsia over 60% of the electricity consumed by commercial buildings goes towards Air Conditioning and if we really want to effect an improvement in energy efficiency it makes sense to look at this area where the maximum energy is consumed.
All Air conditioning & Chiller plants will lose over efficiency over time – the older the system the greater the inefficiency. This is caused by “oil fouling”which reduces the efficiency of the heat transfer process and slows down the refrigerant forcing the compressor to work harder to enable cooling. ASHRAE has done detailed studies over the years to highlight this problem in HVAC systems.
Actually it is very similar to the human body. As we get older due to improper habits, age, diets, etc. cholesterol gets deposited as plaque and our blood vessels start to narrow. As a result, the heart now has to pump harder to keep the blood in circulation. This puts a strain on the heart and we need frequent health checks and expensive medication to keep up the pace. Exactly the same thing happens in air conditioning!
Any migrating oil in an HVAC system is costly both in kWh consumption and money and time spent on maintenance & repair. So the obvious question then is how to manage this oil fouling problem. Some of the techniques that have been tried over time to control oil fouling include the use of mechanical devices likeseparators, skimmers, suction risers, etc.BUT the only permanent solution for this problem is the ICE COLD SYNTHETIC CATALYST technology!
How does ICE COLD solve this problem? IceCOLD's® non-invasive synthetic catalyst compound defeats the surface tension forces that cause oil-fouling. Thecatalyst tightly bonds to the metal surfaces in a one-molecule-thick layer and prevents the recurrence of oil contamination on heat transfer surfaces. The release of the oil contamination restores the lostthermal transfer efficiency of the system. As an added benefit, the capillary tubes and expansion valves are also cleaned and protected from future fouling.
IceCOLD's® is the most cost effective way to maximize the energy efficiency of your Air conditioning & chiller systems. With a pay back on investment of less than 2 years on averageTHIS MEANS YOU GET AN ANNUAL RETURN OF 50% A YEAR! It sounds incredible but I assure you it happens.
Most businesses see energy efficiency as increasingly important and yet are struggling with implementation. The major reason for this is -Lack of information –where Companies or individuals who are in a position to make decisions may be unaware of technologies that could bring about energy savings. Chief executives assume that engineers are already doing everything they should to improve efficiency. Engineers busy keeping the operations running assume the finance boys will implement any cost cutting measures and finance team is busy trying to reduce any capital outflow to boost the bottom line.
Despite all of this, the general feeling is that “WE MUST DO SOMETHING!” But for any solution to be readily accepted by all, it has to be incredibly inexpensive, ridiculously simple to install, smart enough to operate by itselfand require no maintenance. I’m happy to inform you that after 10 years of proven performance in the US markets this amazing product ICE COLD is now available for the first time in the Asian markets! It is incredibly inexpensive, ridiculously simple to install, smart enough to operate by itselfand requires no maintenance.! In fact IT IS A ONE TIME INVESTMENT ONLY!
Now that we know how ICE COLD can save on energy let us look at how it can reduce emissions! On average every Kwh of electricity generated adds over ½ a kg of CO2 emissions to the environment. So when ICE COLD improves the efficiency of your units it reduces the electricity being consumed by them and therefore the GHG emissions they would normally generate. Clients like7-Eleven Corporate are saving almost a Million pounds of CO2 emissions annually in their refrigerated warehouses where we have installed ICE COLD. If the billion air conditioners and refrigeration units all had IceCOLD® technology; globally CO2 would be reduced by 6% to 12%.NOTHING known today will lower CO2 by that much for such little cost.
Now apart from buildings, ICE COLD technology has application in vehicular air conditioning with great success! The world’s automakers are under increasing pressure to build fuel efficient vehicles that emit fewer harmful emissions. Yet surprisingly most of the focus is on designing better & more fuel efficient engines while forgetting that the compressor of the vehicle’s air conditioner is also an engine and consumes fuel!According to a study conducted by the U.S. DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, air conditioning compressors can use as much fuel as a vehicle traveling at 55 kmph!
It stands to reason then that efficient air conditioning in vehicles could save substantially on overall fuel consumption and IceCOLD® offers a remarkably cost effective and permanent solution to this problem.
One of the most amazing results of the effect of ICE COLD in vehicles can be seen during the installation procedure itself. When we measure the AC vent temperature before and after installation we see an immediate drop in vent air temperature of almost 7 degrees. This means a car will get cooler much faster and since the compressor is now running more efficiently the mileage of the car will also improve and you save on fuel costs.Along with this are other benefits like bigger savings on the maintenance of the air conditioner and much faster cooling in summer!
ICE COLD has done over 8000 vehicular installations and the savings and ROI in vehicles has been quite amazing. While it is difficult to calculate the exact savings on fuel consumption as a direct result of ICE COLD technology, the few pilots have shown a payback on investment in a months time and an ROI of over 6000%.
Energy efficiency represents the lowest hanging fruit in solving the above-mentioned challenges with extremely short payback periods and high internal rates of return. There is a call for action and the time is now!
Look around and you can see the effects of climate change every where. Massive floods, devastating drought, super cyclones and tornados, tsunamis & earthquakes – these are all ominous signs of Nature rebelling against what we are doing to the planet. We are close to the tipping point and we desperately need to pull back from the edge. It is time for us to come clean!
