2. COMMUNITY SERVED AND TARGET POPULATION
New Hope for Kids Grief Support Program serves children and their families of any gender,
religion, race or ethnic background in Central Florida. The child must have suffered the loss of a
family member or a significant loved one. Generally this has occurred in the recent past, however
we do receive children who have developed grief related problems several years after the death
has occurred. The death may have occurred for any reason, including illness, accidents, homicide
or suicide. In 2003, a Special Circumstances group was developed for families that have been
affected by a homicide or suicide. In the last few years we have also served several families
grieving the death of a family member who has died while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Within the program as a whole, the children and families come primarily from the following Florida
counties: Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Volusia and Lake. The families that attend our program
generally live within a sixty mile range. Our outreach can extend throughout the state of Florida
and we often help refer out-of-state families to organizations that serve their area.
The overall ethnic breakdown of the children currently attending the program is approximately
49% Caucasian, 22% Black, 26% Hispanic and 3% other (Asian, American Indian, etc.) This
breakdown is relative as many of the families now have a more mixed ethnic identity and would
classify themselves as a combination of two or more categories. The percentages may shift
slightly throughout the year as new children enter and leave the program.
In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of Hispanic and other
ethnically diverse families that seek our assistance. This has led to a more diverse group of
counselors and volunteers to help make the families more at home in our program. This shift
began in 2004 when New Hope for Kids reached out to the Migrant Workers in Apopka, FL, and
opened up a Spanish Speaking Adult support group to support the parents and caregivers and
increased the number of Spanish speaking grief facilitators. In recent years we have also
attempted to increase the number of adult male grief facilitators that work with the children. This
has helped make the adolescent boys feel a stronger link to the program.

Our diverse group of Board Members, Staff and Volunteers include and are not limited to the
following estimate of Ethnicities/Cultures:
Caucasian (70 %)
Hispanic (15%)
African American (10%)
Asian, American Indian, Jewish (5 %)
Health Fairs and Community Fairs:
On average we participate in 19 a year- Areas of focus are those where there is a lower SES and
a higher population of Minority Groups.
New Hope for Kids’ brochures are placed in Funeral Homes,
Churches and Hospitals in all communities of the areas we serve.
We are located directly across from the Jewish Community Center and have a strong working
relationship with their staff and members.
Monthly meetings are held with school counselors,
school social workers and SAFE (Student Assistance Family Empowerment) Program
coordinators in all school districts within the counties we serve.
Networking and maintaining visibility in communities where members are less likely to seek our
services has been our main thrust in ensuring that ALL are served and represented in our
organization.
