Camping Merit Badge
Show that you know first aid for and how to
prevent injuries or illnesses that could occur
while camping, including
hypothermia, frostbite, heat
reactions, dehydration, altitude
sickness, insect stings, tick
bites, snakebite, blisters, and hyperventilation.

• a. Prepare a list of clothing you would need for
overnight campouts in both warm and cold weather.
Explain the term "layering."
• b. Discuss footwear for different kinds of weather
and how the right footwear is important for
protecting your feet.
• c. Explain the proper care and storage of camping
equipment (clothing, footwear, bedding).
• d. List the outdoor essentials necessary for any
campout, and explain why each item is needed.

1. Sign up as a Merit Badge Counselor
To qualify as a merit badge counselor, you must
Be at least 18 years old.
Be proficient in the merit badge subject by vocation or avocation
Be able to work with Scout age boys.
Be registered with the Boy Scouts of America (as a Merit Badge
Counselor).
As a merit badge counselor, I agree to
Follow the requirements of the merit badge, making no deletions or
additions, ensuring that the advancement are fair and uniform for all
Scouts.
Have a Scout and his buddy present at all instructional sessions.
Renew my registration annually if I plan to continue as a merit badge
counselor.

Application for EVERY person who
is going to be involved in the
program
Meaning dealing with the Youth

You’ll be listed in a database
• You’ll need to do more
• Every time you can hand out a card or
something that says Merit Badge Counselor

Find the District Commissioner
Call the Council Office and Ask for the
name of the Commissioners in a district.
Contact the commissioner and say you
have programs for Scouts.

District Commissioners
We’ll tell every SM that you will do
programs and teach merit badges.

Commissioners
• One for each district
• One for the council
• Invite them to the programs!!!

Word of Mouth, with a Hook is
the best way of doing things
The hook is you are helping
a volunteer, saving them
hours and are an expert in
the field.

Don’t Worry about
• Giving the kids anything when they come
• You can but
• Giving a discount
• You can, because many of your competitors do,
but give it to the 1 SM or Unit Leader
• Your Expertise and willingness to give it to
kids are going to win.

2. Always Always Always abide
by the GSS!

GSS: Guide to Safe Scouting
• The GSS will keep your store out of trouble
• Basics. Never one on one with a youth
• Always 2 adults or
• Always 2 kids
• You can take GSS online.

Require that every person in your
store that is going to be providing
program or dealing with the Scouts
as Scouts complete the GSS.
