Ms. Ndenecho’s Nuggets
Students read a story in order to
identify words with the “r” controlled
“ar” sound. Then they created an
organized list with the words they
identified from the story on a car.
Library sorted by content area. Students enjoying reading!
 I station
 www.studyisland.com
Interactive bulletin board: Our
weekly strategy is Questioning.
Students are expected to read the
poem “Spring Singers” and write
questions they have about the text
on post its and post them to the
board.
Building Vocabulary: Million Dollar
Words. Million Dollar words
encourage students to expand their
oral and written vocabulary.
Together in a whole class discussion
a commonly used word is webbed
(bad, good, mean, big). Students list
synonyms for these words,
sometimes a thesaurus is used. The
chart is then hung up in the
classroom. Students are given a
million dollar coupon every time they
use a million dollar word in speaking
or writing.
Theme 5: Family Time
 Family theme books in library
 Classroom Family Pictures
 Interactive Toolkit Lesson from text
Brothers and Sisters, making
connections.
Reading Strategies
Parts of Speech: “Grammar Garden”
Students complete weekly writing
prompts, brief constructed responses
and Math problems of the week. The
best responses get displayed in the
hallway.
Accountable talk stems!
 Howard University (works independently)
 Morgan State University (works with a
partner)
 Bowie State University (works with
teacher)
 The whole class achieves math success!
Class teams created pictographs to
display various data.
 How many feet
are in 1
yard?
I see 1 foot!
The students used prior knowledge that there are 12 inches in 1
foot and 36 inches in a yard, to make the conclusion that there
are 3 feet in a yard. They used paper yards to color 3 feet.
Students used play dough to analyze the properties of solid geometric
figures in order to compare two- and three-dimensional shapes such as:
square to a cube, square and rectangle to a rectangular prism. (Please
click photo to watch clip) or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCo4TnYTraU to view on youtube.com.
Bulletins Boards are interactive and ask students questions
according to content.
Students analyzed the difference between three types of
dangerous weather.
Students identified and defined the purpose of the
Nutrition Facts Label in order to identify servings
per container/package, calories and fat on a
Nutrition facts label.
