Community service and ivy league schools
1. Community Service and Ivy League Schools
Ivy League schools are known throughout the United States as the best of the best. These are the
schools that students know from the time they are young that they want to attend. All through high school
students will get the best grades possible to be able to have a chance to get accepted into. Is four years
of keeping perfect grades enough to be accepted into an Ivy League school? One would think so, but
there are other things taken into account.
Ivy League schools will look at numerous things when you apply. Of course the grades will be looked at
and then there are what is known as the extras. For some, it is a sport that they excel in. As in the case of
football players and great coaches. It is a common thing for those who excel in football while in high
school to be watched by those coaches at colleges. This is known as recruiting.
College coaches will contact the parents of a player if a player is under the age of 18 years old. While in
what is known as the “contact period” a coach from the Ivy League school may visit the parents and
attend games where the student is playing. Parents and students will also visit the college campus which
will most likely be paid for by the university or Ivy League School.
Another way that potential candidates earn points is to be involved in a charity. Top colleges also look for
the humanity and compassion that a candidate exhibits towards others. Now, there are people that
manage to have all three attributes.
The over-achievers are the ones who can not only manage in all things but excel. And this is how the Ivy
Leagues schools extended their acceptance letters to William Heikkinen of Andover, Massachusetts. This
individual had all of the qualities and more that they could possibly accept.
The Golden Warriors embraced this team member and in his senior year he contributed 72 catches for
1,175 yards and 9 touchdowns. This is not all he is known for at his former high school. William Heikkinen
earned honor roll each year and was awarded the Chemistry and Survey of Film Underclassmen awards.
William Heikkinen was lettered in track, field and football and managed to pick up yet another opportunity.
Together with a group of peers the team tutored elementary school students in both academics and self-
confidence building.
This is the makeup of a person who is excellent in anything they attempt. Not only is this what the Ivy
Leagues are looking for but it is the type of student that these schools invite in. William Heikkinen was
sought after by Brown University, Harvard, and Princeton. The school he chose was Brown University for
a number of things.
Many great football players went from Andover High School to become alumni at Brown University.
Knowing great players who went from his high school onward to Brown University may have influenced
some of his decision. Another deciding factor was the amount of travel time between Brown University
and Andover.
There are very few students who have all of the attributes that Ivy League schools consider. William
Heikkinen has them all and is a freshmen at Brown and on the football team. With the rigorous academic
studies and the football practices this will be a student that will take it all in stride. Mr. Heikkinen will be
watched. As his high school football coach once said, “This will be a player to keep an eye on because he
is going places.”
About: William Heikkinen was raised in Andover, Massachusetts by his parents and he has two younger
siblings. Will was great at any sport that he decided to try. Having a baseball and bat in hand most of the
time as a younger child his love of sports showed. As he grew older he tried and took to the game of
football. His high academic grades and his ability on the field caught the attention of Ivy
Leagues.Heikkinen was sought after by some of the most prestigious universities in the United States,
