There are many common stereotypes that exist across different social groups. Some examples include stereotypes about ethnicity, such as the idea that all black people are athletic or that all Arabs are terrorists. There are also gender stereotypes that portray women as less capable than men. People with disabilities are often stereotyped as being different or limited. Different age groups also face stereotypes, such as children being seen as loud and teens as rebellious. Socioeconomic class has stereotypes as well, where upper classes are viewed as wealthy and educated while lower classes have low wage jobs. Sexual orientation also involves stereotypes, like gay men being seen as weak or gay women as more masculine.

Ethnicity & Culture
A common stereotype of ethnicity is surrounding black people; an example would be that all blacks
are good at sport which is indicating that ALL blacks are male or female as its grouping the race
together to believe that everyone of that race are good athletes. Different cultures also have a lot of
stereotypes, for example suggesting that all Arabs and Muslims are terrorists, this is also
stereotyping countries. A few other examples of this would be that all people that live in England
have bad teeth or that all Mexicans that have migrated to America have migrated illegally.
Gender
There are a few stereotypes of the gender, typically women are seen as more vulnerable than men;
an example would be that men are strong and do all the work whereas women aren’t as smart as
men and they cannot do as good of a job as a man. Stereotypes of gender are very sexist towards
women; this is because men are seen as the ‘backbone’ of a woman’s life. The same is for the
younger generation however boys are also seen in a negative light, they are seen as messy and
unclean, furthermore girls are unable to be sporty, boys that spend a lot of time on the computer
are seen as ‘geeks’ in a negative light when In reality it is good to be clever and aware.
Disability
There are a variety of stereotypes of disability depending on which disability you are suffering from.
The general stereotype is that people with disabilities are ‘different’ this is because they are seen are
partial or limited; they are easily identified as ‘others’ which becomes a metaphor for alienation. A
positive stereotype is that a successful ‘handicapped’ person is successful, this can be because they
are then seen as inspirational as they are suffering yet capable of activities that ‘normal’ people can
do. However a negative stereotype for disability is a certain disability which is mental disability.
People with disabilities are consumed by an incessant, inevitable rage and anger at their loss or
those who are not disabled. They ‘lack the moral sense that would restrain them from hurting others
or themselves’
Age
The different stereotypes for age is discriminating a certain age group based on their generation.
Examples of this would be that children are loud, spoilt, annoying, vulnerable yet intelligent. Adults
are known for being mature, independent, work orientated and stern however they also are caring.
The older generation are stereotyped for being wise, vulnerable, forgetful, wrinkly and quiet. They
are massively seen by teens to stereotype the teenage generation. Teens are stereotyped by all the
generations to be rebellious, lazy, and sexual and focus on irrelevant things such as fashion and
materialistic objects.
Class
There are three different classes, these are upper class, middle class and lower class. Upper class are
stereotyped to be more wealthier and more educated. They’re stereotyped to have more experience

2. also as they can get access to the exclusive clubs, have careers established in law, financial firms or
medical specialties. They are usually known for wearing business clothes but even casual clothing are
of a high quality and an upper class style.
Middle class are usually stereotyped to be successful businessmen, for example grocers, and
building contractors. The older age group are retirees, with medium sized homes, often owner. They
are more careful with money and use it wisely; they also like to impress people.
Lower class usually have low wage occupations such as store clerks, beauticians and painters. They
live in rented housing and occasionally get into difficulties with family turmoil. They usually eat food
of a lower quality for example, spaghetti, hamburgers and at very few fruit and vegetables. The TV is
usually their main source of entertainment.
Sexuality
Gay men are stereotypically seen to be weak and camp, also that they aren’t ‘normal humans’
Gay women are stereotypically seen as butch and more manly than a straight woman.
