RESEARCH PROJECTS
• Machine Reading (2009-Current)
Research Project funded by DARPA
Advisor: Dr. Jerry Hobbs
Participants: USC-ISI, UTexas-Austin, IBM, University of Utah
This project aims at reading news texts , converting these texts into a machine
understandable format, and deriving inferences from the text.
• Sentiment Analysis from Twitter Data (Summer 2009)
Research Project at PwC
Advisor: Dr. Cynthia Thompson
This project aimed at extracting product sentiment from microblogs, where the length of
each message is 140 characters or less
• Discovering Granularities in Processes (2008-Current)
Research Project at ISI
Advisor: Dr. Jerry Hobbs
This project aims at discovering various granularities in process texts and displaying a
graphical representation of the same.
• Causal and Temporal relations in Biomedical Data (2008)
Research Project at ISI
Advisor: Dr. Jerry Hobbs
This project aimed at discovering time based interactions in Genetic data, and their possible
applications in Medical discoveries.
• Mobius Sapling II (2007 – 2008)
Research Project funded by DARPA
Advisors: Dr. Jerry Hobbs and Dr. Eduard Hovy
This project aimed at reading texts related to Engines, and converting these texts into
machine understandable format, and deriving inferences from the text.
• Mobius Seedling I (2006-2007)
Research Project funded by DARPA
Advisors: Dr. Jerry Hobbs and Dr. Eduard Hovy
This project aimed at reading texts related to the heart, and converting these texts into
machine understandable format, and deriving inferences from the text. Ddeveloped a system
for binarizing and enriching Penn Treebank style parse trees.
• Learning By Reading (2006)
Research Project funded by DARPA
Advisors: Dr. Jerry Hobbs and Dr. Eduard Hovy
This project aimed to develop a system that is capable of reading a high school chemistry
textbook and answering questions relevant to the text provided. Produced deep lexical
understanding of text based on shallow semantics. Produced semantically deep axioms for
textual understanding.
• MOVER (2005)
Research Project funded by ARDA
Advisor: Dr. Jerry Hobbs
This project aimed at finding multimodal co reference from audio and video data of a news
clip. Developed an Abductive inference system called Mini-TACITUS.
• TARSQI (2004 – 2006)
Research Project funded by ARDA
Advisor: Dr. Jerry Hobbs
1Extracting time relationships of events from annotated events of news paper articles.
Developed automated Web enabled GUI Annotation processing system using Perl,DHTML

ACADEMIC PROJECTS
• Automatic Axiom Generation for repairing Logical Forms (2006)
Investigative Course Project @ USC – Empirical Methods in NLP
Advisor: Dr. Kevin Knight
Project to repair incomplete logical forms obtained from text. Incompleteness occurred due to
parse errors and limited syntax-to-semantics rules.
• Automatic Sentence Generation (2005)
Course Project @ USC – Natural Language Processing
Advisor: Dr. Eduard Hovy
Develop a rule based system, forward chaining on grammatical rules and Backtracking to auto-
generate syntactically correct and semantically meaningful sentences for semantic knowledge
specified in English. (Language Generation)
• Sentence type recognition and partition (2005)
Course Project @ USC – Natural Language Processing
Advisor: Dr. Daniel Marcu
To analyze and understand the underlying theme and meaning of different portions of a sentence
• Image recognizer (2005)
Course Project @ USC – Artificial Intelligence
Advisor: Dr. Sven Koenig
Enhance a Three-layer fully-connected feed forward Neural Network to learn and correctly classify
faces and poses of images given as an input.
• Thesaurus (2005)
Course Project @ USC – Lexical Semantics
Advisor: Dr. Patrick Pantel
Develop a Thesaurus using statistical correlation of information shared by words.
PUBLICALLY AVAILABLE SOFTWARE
Mini-TACITUS : The Abductive Commonsense Inference Text Understanding
