3. Many media formats are designed especially for the Web, these
file formats are intended to function without proprietary plug-ins,
applications or media viewers (e.g. Media codecs)
◦ JPEG, GIF, PNG are the commonly supported image files
used on the WWW, other proprietary formats are often
unsupported in Web Browsers, Learning Object systems etc.
◦ MP3, MPEG, WAV are common audio formats, you may need
to convert your audio to MP3 format, a highly compressed
format for use on the WWW.
◦ AVI, MPEG are common video formats.
◦ Flash Video (FLV / SWF) format used in Flash media on Web
pages, this format is required for many online video
applictions, including the University media server.

Note – Web 2.0 can be useful, but remember these services are
unsupported by University systems, CSD etc. they may not be
backed up, service is not guaranteed. It is always advisable to
use a University system rather than a Web 2.0 service and
explore any in-house options available. Use of Web 2.0 for library
services should include consultation with the Library Systems team.
