The Golden Ring is a circular route northeast of Moscow comprised of ancient towns that played a large role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church. These towns, which include Sergiyev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalesskiy, Rostov Velikiy and others, are often referred to as open-air museums featuring unique 12th-18th century Russian architecture such as kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals and churches.
