JMS is known as standard way to implement distributed work with messaging in Java world. There are many JMS providers, both open source and commercial. Large percent of developers use JMS for almost every case when they want to sent message and process it on the other side. But now there are many alternative solutions to organize message queues: AMQP, Redis, ZooKeeper, Apache Kafka or even custom solutions based on Cassandra. Why not to use them instead of JMS? In this talk we will discuss key “issues” in any messaging system and then with this knowledge in mind look once again at JMS and alternative approaches using practical cases from my experience. May be after this talk some more people will stop using JMS and start using their mind. :)

JavaOne 2016 JMS is pretty simple, right? Once you’ve mastered topics and queues, the rest can appear trivial, but that isn’t the case. The queuing system, whether ActiveMQ, OpenMQ, or WebLogic JMS, provides many more features and settings than appear in the Java EE documentation. This session looks at some of the important extended features and configuration settings. What would you need to optimize if your messages are large or you need to minimize prefetching? What is the best way to implement time-delayed messages? The presentation also looks at dangerous bugs that can be introduced via simple misconfigurations with pooled beans. The JMS APIs are deceptively simple, but getting an implementation into production and tuned correctly can be a bit trickier.

There are times when you should consider setting up secure communications between your software components across network boundaries. Here are just a few: * Your application is enormous (e.g., the global deployment of a marketing site targeting billions of people) * Remoteness (e.g., your company has branch office locations around the globe) * Your network constraints prevent communication (e.g., your machines in Azure Cloud Services are unable to talk to each other directly) * You don't know the network conditions (e.g., IoT or mobile devices) Yves Goeleven and Sean Feldman show how to overcome such challenges using NServiceBus.

With a current zoo of technologies and different ways of their interaction it's a big challenge to architect a system (or adopt existed one) that will conform to low-latency BigData analysis requirements. Apache Kafka and Kappa Architecture in particular take more and more attention over classic Hadoop-centric technologies stack. New Consumer API put significant boost in this direction. Microservices-based streaming processing and new Kafka Streams tend to be a synergy in BigData world.

For successful implementation of distributed systems, flexible and scalable messaging layer is one of the most important components. Setting a static messaging infrastructure and provisioning it manually doesn’t fit well in the cloud-centric development model most organisations are adopting lately. The EnMaase project (http://enmasse.io/) provides an open source solution for deploying your own messaging infrastructure in the cloud. It’s based on proven standards and technologies like AMQP and Kubernetes and provides all the features you’d need, from multi-tenancy to simple management and monitoring. This session will cover EnMaase project in details, providing details on the architecture, messaging concepts supported and ways to set and configure it.

Device connectivity is one of the most common issues IoT developers need to solve. Having an open source solution based on the standardized protocols that solves recurring connectivity problems is a very useful tool to have. Meet Eclipse Hono, a cloud-based IoT connectivity platform which provides remote interfaces for device connectivity and mechanisms for uniform interaction with devices regardless of the communication protocol. This session will explain basic ideas and concepts behind Eclipse Hono project, like APIs and communication patterns that Hono provides, its architecture and deployment options. Next, we'll get into the recent development efforts and explain architectural changes made in order to provide more flexibility and better integration with other components of the IoT stack, like messaging, identity management solutions and device registration services. While scalable messaging is one of the crucial pre-requirements for device connectivity, the goal of Eclipse Hono is not to provide its own solution in this space but rather work with other cloud-based messaging platforms. One such project is called EnMasse (https://github.com/EnMasseProject/enmasse) and it provides an open source solution for deploying scalable messaging infrastructure in the cloud. The rest of the session will introduce basics of the EnMasse project and show how Hono and EnMasse can work together to provide a truly scalable device connectivity. The session will end with a demo showing Hono and EnMasse in action providing scalable device connectivity for IoT applications.

Scale changes everything. Number of connections and destinations went from dozen to thousands, number of messages increased by order of magnitude. What once was quite adequate for enterprise messaging can't scale to support "Internet of Things". We need new protocols, patterns and architectures to support this new world. This session will start with basic introduction to the concept of Internet of things. Next it will discuss general technical challenges involved with the concept and explain why it is becoming mainstream now. Now we're ready to start talking about solutions. We will introduce some messaging patterns (like telemetry and command/control) and protocols (such as MQTT and AMQP) used in these scenarios. Finally we will see how Apache ActiveMQ is gearing up for this race. We will show tips for horizontal and vertical scaling of the broker, related projects that can help with deployments and what the future development road map looks like.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
