with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. It is essential
HIGH-IMPACT to focus resources on where this infectious disease
exists to save those who have contracted it and
PARTNERSHIPS can transmit it and those who are most likely
to contract it. Deciding who to treat requires

countries eligible for the program.
2. ANTIRETROVIRALS FOR HEALTHY LIFE
According to a 2008 UNAIDS report, an
estimated 33.2 million people are living with
HIV/AIDS. Africa has been the hardest hit by the
HIV/AIDS pandemic, as the continent is home to
68 percent of those infected. Antiretroviral drugs
(ARVs), which significantly delay the progression of
HIV to AIDS and allow people infected with HIV to
live relatively normal, healthy lives, are available on

average to only 44 percent of those who require
the drugs. Direct Relief partnered with the
OGRA Foundation in Kenya and the Ministry
of Health and Child Welfare in Zimbabwe to
distribute ARVs to more than 6,000 HIV-infected
people annually.

7. A CHAMPION OF
WOMEN AND GIRLS
In Somaliland, as in many developing countries, pregnancy is a high-risk
health condition and delivery can be life-threatening to both mother and
child. To help women and their babies survive childbirth in her country,
Edna Adan Ismail founded a hospital in 2002 with her own funds that
serves as a center for care and training.
Direct Relief has supported the Edna Adan University Hospital since
2005 with more than $1 million in medicines and supplies, and joined with
the Fistula Foundation to build a surgical block at the hospital with three
new operating theaters that have just opened. These facilities will vastly
increase women’s access to needed surgeries and interventions when
complications arise during delivery.
Among her many
accomplishments, Ismail was the first

girl in her country to read, the first
nurse-midwife, and the former First
Lady. She also is a deeply committed

WuDunn, for her groundbreaking work in championing the rights and
health of women and girls in Somaliland and throughout the Horn of Africa.
Never one to think small, Ismail plans to train 1,000 new midwives
which would vastly improve the chances that a woman in Somaliland
would have trained support present when it came time to deliver her
baby. This, ultimately, would save lives.
To give women and their babies the best chance to thrive, Direct
