              4 5

Many people think Nelson Mandela is the most important leader in history. This is because he
tried to improve conditions not only for black people in South Africa but for everybody, all over
         the world.
a _____ When he became the first democratically-elected black President of South Africa in 1994,
             4
it was another step in an extraordinary journey. His autobiography, A Long Walk to Freedom, talks
about this journey, which began when he was born in a village called Qunu in 1918. His father
was a Chief of the Tembu tribe.
b ____ He was a special person from an early age. When Nelson was a child, almost no black
children could go to school, but Mandela studied and became a lawyer. This was very useful to
him when he started his fight against apartheid, the separation of black and white people in all
areas of society, which began in South Africa in the 1940s.
c ____ Nelson fought hard to help people. In the 1940s and 1950s he talked about education,
formed organisations and led protests, but legally he could do nothing because black people did
not have the same rights as white people.
d ____ The government put Nelson in prison in 1962, at first for five years. Then they changed
the sentence to life imprisonment. Mandela never gave up his faith that his belief in freedom and
         equality for everybody was right.
e ____ Eventually, the political system changed, and Mandela’s resistance, even while he was in jail,
was an important cause of this change. He was released in 1990 after almost twenty-eight years
in prison. Three years later, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. Mandela was truly a
         champion of the people.

 2 Now answer these questions.

c What does apartheid mean? ______________________________________________________________
d Why couldn’t Nelson Mandela do a lot to help people during the 1940s and 1950s?
       ________________________________________________________________________________________
e Did Nelson Mandela ever give up hope? ____________________________________________________
f When did he win the Nobel Prize? _________________________________________________________

Great disabled Britons

1 Read the article and answer the questions.
a Who was in the list of greatest Britons and greatest disabled Britons? ____________________________
                                                                             Winston Churchill.
b What disabilities did/do the four people suffer from? _________________________________________
c How many of the people are still alive? Who are they? _______________________________________
d How did Churchill refer to his depressions? _________________________________________________
e Where was Byron when he died? __________________________________________________________
f How many gold medals has Tanni Grey-Thompson won? _____________________________________
g Which word does not describe Stephen Hawking: mathematician, writer, politician? _______________

1 In 2003, people in Britain had a vote to decide on the greatest Britons of the 20th century. The winner
was Sir Winston Churchill, the politician who led Britain during the Second World War.
2 More recently, there was a different kind of vote. This time, people voted for the greatest disabled Britons
of the past and present. They are all people who did or are doing great things, despite their disabilities.
3 Surprisingly, perhaps, Churchill can also be included in the disabled category. All his life, but especially
in his later years, he suffered from very bad depression. He called these terrible moods his ‘black dog’.
        Churchill died in 1965.
4 Lord Byron was one of Britain’s great romantic poets. Someone once described him as ‘mad, bad and
dangerous to know’. He had a badly deformed foot and walked with difficulty. Despite this, he travelled
all round Europe, writing and having adventures. He died in 1824 from rheumatic fever at the age of
thirty-six. They buried his heart in Greece where he died and sent his body back to England.
5 Now let’s look at two modern heroes — or rather, a hero and a heroine. Tanni Grey-Thompson is a
disabled athlete who suffers from spina bifida. She has won fourteen paralympic medals including nine
golds and has broken over twenty world records. As a wheelchair athlete, she was also the winner of five
London marathons, the last one in 2001. Now she is a popular TV presenter and gives talks on motivation.
6 Our final great disabled Briton is Professor Stephen Hawking. A professor of Mathematics at Cambridge
University, he became famous in 1988 when he wrote A Brief History of Time. The book tries to
explain how the universe began. Hawking is almost totally paralysed as a result of motor neurone
disease and he uses a voice synthesiser to speak. His brain, however, is as active as ever. He is still
        writing today.

2 Find words that mean the following:
a fighting between countries or people _______________
                                                  war ___
  b not long ago _______________ ___
c the way that you are feeling _________________
  d put under ground _________________
e someone who introduces programmes on TV or radio _________________
  f a university teacher _________________

3 Think of some well-known disabled people. Make a list and compare with two or three
students. Did you think of the same people?

16 © Richmond Publishing, 2004 PHOTOCOPIABLE

  • 4. 3.4 Reading and writing Unit3 1 Match each picture to the correct paragraph. 1 3 2 4 5 Many people think Nelson Mandela is the most important leader in history. This is because he tried to improve conditions not only for black people in South Africa but for everybody, all over the world. a _____ When he became the first democratically-elected black President of South Africa in 1994, 4 it was another step in an extraordinary journey. His autobiography, A Long Walk to Freedom, talks about this journey, which began when he was born in a village called Qunu in 1918. His father was a Chief of the Tembu tribe. b ____ He was a special person from an early age. When Nelson was a child, almost no black children could go to school, but Mandela studied and became a lawyer. This was very useful to him when he started his fight against apartheid, the separation of black and white people in all areas of society, which began in South Africa in the 1940s. c ____ Nelson fought hard to help people. In the 1940s and 1950s he talked about education, formed organisations and led protests, but legally he could do nothing because black people did not have the same rights as white people. d ____ The government put Nelson in prison in 1962, at first for five years. Then they changed the sentence to life imprisonment. Mandela never gave up his faith that his belief in freedom and equality for everybody was right. e ____ Eventually, the political system changed, and Mandela’s resistance, even while he was in jail, was an important cause of this change. He was released in 1990 after almost twenty-eight years in prison. Three years later, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. Mandela was truly a champion of the people. 2 Now answer these questions. a Where was Nelson Mandela born? _________________________________________________________ In a village called Qunu in South Africa. b What is the title of the book he wrote about his life? _________________________________________ c What does apartheid mean? ______________________________________________________________ d Why couldn’t Nelson Mandela do a lot to help people during the 1940s and 1950s? ________________________________________________________________________________________ e Did Nelson Mandela ever give up hope? ____________________________________________________ f When did he win the Nobel Prize? _________________________________________________________ © Richmond Publishing, 2004 PHOTOCOPIABLE 15
  • 5. 3.5 Culture Unit3 Great disabled Britons 1 Read the article and answer the questions. a Who was in the list of greatest Britons and greatest disabled Britons? ____________________________ Winston Churchill. b What disabilities did/do the four people suffer from? _________________________________________ c How many of the people are still alive? Who are they? _______________________________________ d How did Churchill refer to his depressions? _________________________________________________ e Where was Byron when he died? __________________________________________________________ f How many gold medals has Tanni Grey-Thompson won? _____________________________________ g Which word does not describe Stephen Hawking: mathematician, writer, politician? _______________ 1 In 2003, people in Britain had a vote to decide on the greatest Britons of the 20th century. The winner was Sir Winston Churchill, the politician who led Britain during the Second World War. 2 More recently, there was a different kind of vote. This time, people voted for the greatest disabled Britons of the past and present. They are all people who did or are doing great things, despite their disabilities. 3 Surprisingly, perhaps, Churchill can also be included in the disabled category. All his life, but especially in his later years, he suffered from very bad depression. He called these terrible moods his ‘black dog’. Churchill died in 1965. 4 Lord Byron was one of Britain’s great romantic poets. Someone once described him as ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’. He had a badly deformed foot and walked with difficulty. Despite this, he travelled all round Europe, writing and having adventures. He died in 1824 from rheumatic fever at the age of thirty-six. They buried his heart in Greece where he died and sent his body back to England. 5 Now let’s look at two modern heroes — or rather, a hero and a heroine. Tanni Grey-Thompson is a disabled athlete who suffers from spina bifida. She has won fourteen paralympic medals including nine golds and has broken over twenty world records. As a wheelchair athlete, she was also the winner of five London marathons, the last one in 2001. Now she is a popular TV presenter and gives talks on motivation. 6 Our final great disabled Briton is Professor Stephen Hawking. A professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, he became famous in 1988 when he wrote A Brief History of Time. The book tries to explain how the universe began. Hawking is almost totally paralysed as a result of motor neurone disease and he uses a voice synthesiser to speak. His brain, however, is as active as ever. He is still writing today. 2 Find words that mean the following: a fighting between countries or people _______________ war ___ b not long ago _______________ ___ c the way that you are feeling _________________ d put under ground _________________ e someone who introduces programmes on TV or radio _________________ f a university teacher _________________ 3 Think of some well-known disabled people. Make a list and compare with two or three students. Did you think of the same people? 16 © Richmond Publishing, 2004 PHOTOCOPIABLE
