If there's one thing all stay-at-home moms seem to agree on, it’s that they’re not around other adults enough. In fact, some of them are so starved for adult conversation that they would take phone calls from telemarketers just to hear an adult’s voice saying adult stuff in an adult manner.

If there’s one thing all stay-at-home moms seem to agree on, it’s that they’re not around other adults enough. In fact,
some of them are so starved for adult conversation that they would take phone calls from telemarketers just to hear an
adult’s voice saying adult stuff in an adult manner.
If you’re a stay-at-home mom, you can probably relate to that. While you understand that being a stay-at-home mom is
a full-time job, you may still feel that you’re not contributing enough to the outside world. You could go back to work, but
you don’t want to. Well, just because you’re confined within your home with your child doesn’t mean you have to cut all
ties with the outside world! You can certainly spend your days interacting with other adults, taking care of your kids, and
making money. How?
By running your own home-based business!
Unless your child is the modern equivalent of Dennis the menace, you can certainly be a full-time mom and a full-time
business owner. It’s totally doable! Like any venture, your home-based business has an equal chance of succeeding or
failing. Its success widely depends on whether or not you know what you’re doing. We’re here to help you with that. First,
let’s take a look at some home-based business ideas that could work for you.
Home-based business ideas
In reality, you could run any type of business from home. However, as a mom, you might not want to entertain the idea of
running a catering business out of your kitchen or fielding phone calls all day. You still need to pay attention to your
child, after all! The ideal home-based business for you is the kind of business that requires your attention in short
intervals throughout the day. Here are some ideas:
Tutoring
Day care (your child will get to play with other children!)
Blogging
Accounting (you’ll be especially busy during tax season)
Freelance web design
Crafts (good at knitting, pottery, or crafts in general? Make a venture out of it!)
You want to have a business that allows you to be home (instead of visiting your clients’ homes or workplaces). Your
business should also give you the flexibility to attend to your child at a moment’s notice, and it’d be smart not to have a
business that has a lot of people coming to your home on a regular basis.
Pitfalls to avoid
Running a home-based business may sound easy, but it does have its own challenges. We’re here to warn you about
some of the common pitfalls stay-at-home moms slash home-based business owners face.
Isolation. Face it! You are home, most likely alone (listing grown-ups only) for the bigger part of your day,
craving for adult company. Don’t worry, this is absolutely normal. Going to work is a social event. You are
amongst people even on your way in; you might listen into other conversations, you socialize. At a workplace
there are other adults talking about real life things! I know your kids are great, but talking to them only is not really
the same. When you are stuck in your home you are even longing for chatting to someone on the street. My
advice is to do that. Have “social breaks”. Head down to the shop, go for a walk, call a friend; these will keep you
balanced. If you are employed remotely, tell your boss to dial you in (even on Skype) for meetings, and having a
common chat-room with other employees will make you feel like you are part of the team.
Selling yourself short. Just because you’re a stay-at-home mom doesn’t mean you can’t charge what you’re
2. worth. Do some research and find out what your market value is. Take a look at your direct costs, overhead, and
projected profit. This will help you determine a fair price to charge your customers.
Losing control. There are several different ways you could lose control of your home-based business,
including letting your work space get messy/disorganized, letting your home life bleed into the business, and not
keeping your work on a strict schedule. Always be sure to organize your work space, attend to your child’s needs
while keeping them separate from your business’s needs, and use your time wisely so you don’t get
overwhelmed and lose control of your business.
Smart things to do
Define your niche. Stand out. Promote your business. Roll out cyber Monday or black Friday deals. Build great
relationships with your clients. Make your business legal. Claim your deductions. Insure your business. Set boundaries.
Delegate. Find the time to attend to your family’s needs. Never doubt yourself. Have fun!
