3. The opening sequence for the Avengers starts off
with a series of page flicking showing one cartoon
image from another which is assumed to be from a
comic book.. As this is happening the text
“MARVEL” superimposes into the shot drawing the
focus to the fact that the film is based on a marvel
action comic. With this established, the audience is
able to assume that this film is action, Sci fi, fantasy
etc, similarly to other marvel action films. Based on
the opening sequence, you know that the target
audience is primarily male, 13 to 20; which you can
tell from the colours used (red, black and orange -
which are quite masculine colours).
The text Marvel stays superimposed while the
background fades into red, and the text is panned in
to the background. The opening sequences uses a
lot of camera movement which is conventional in an
action film as it conveys the tension and suspense
that is present in action films.
4. The opening sequence then involves the camera
panning into an ident showing the audience the
production company of the film, this is conventional
and is seen through most film. The shot the then
pans out to show the image of the blue cube. As well
as that camera movements, it also fades into a shot
that tracks the stairs.
In the opening a lot of panning and tracking is used
to build the suspense and the visuals is synchronised
with a voice over, which is played by a deep voice,
following the fantasy, sci fi theme.
5. The mise en scene in the screen shot conveys a
message that the film will have elements of danger
and mystery while the prop used shows that the film
has a supernatural edge to it.
Again the shot pans out and cuts to a different scene
where selective sound is used to emphasise the
helicopter sound which helps establish the
atmosphere of the scene and the setting, shown by
the establishing shot of a distant view of the city. In
conjunction with that, the non diegetic sound played
through the opening uses an orchestra which is
slowly built to help alongside the tense atmosphere.
Following that, the scene also involves a shot of army
soldiers running around, again supporting the action
part of the film.
Overall the opening sequence to the avengers is
somewhat conventional and somewhat not. Firstly it
follows it by showing who the production company,
but has not shown who is casted in it or other
members that has helped made the film e.g.
director, writer etc. Nevertheless the opening still has
a lot of camera movements which helps the flow of
everything but also conveying the action, mystery and
6.
7. The opening sequence starts off with an ident showing the production company,
Lionsgate. Following that the shot cuts to a black background where the opening
credits begin. This is conventional and is shown in most films which allows the
audience to know who was involved in making the film. Along with that, a type
writing sound is used in sync with the writing on the shot, which conveys a quirky
feel to the film and establishes the fact the genre of the film is a teen drama. The
target audience is predominantly female age 13 to 18.
8. The shot also shows the main casts in the opening
sequence and while doing so there is reverse tracking
shot showing the motorway and road. The scene has
nothing to do with the actual content of the film but
this is very common in films, as the opening
sequence is there to set the atmosphere and to
establish what the film is about. Judging by the
reverse tracking shot, the audience can expect the
film not to have any action as the shot portrays a
calm and peaceful tone which can be shown through
the lighting which is dimmed and shows the sky
during the night. What the audience can expect that
the film will have elements of drama and possibly
some romance. The non diegetic music played in
sync with the visuals, which is a soft guitar, is used in
the opening and portrays a romantic feel which
shows the audience that the genre of the film is also
romance.
9. It then jump cuts to a shot of the same area but shows the ceiling. The
reverse tracking shot continues all the way through showing the people
who helped made it e.g. Costume designer, music supervisor, it then
cuts to the shot of the camera coming out of the tunnel while it
continues to show the dark sky. The very last credit shows the director
of the film, which shows the importance of him.
After that the shot fades to a black background for a few seconds then
fades and shows the main character with an over the shoulder shot. As
the camera pans out to show a long shot of him, a voice over is played
and it is of the main character saying what he is writing in his letter.
The mid shot gives a closer look to him and the lamp gives a more
intimate and personalised atmosphere. The scene is calm and gives an
insight to what the character is like, which the audience can assume
someone who keeps to himself and sensible. Already from this scene
you know that the film will have drama and tackle problems faced by
teens by the voice narration “I haven't talked to anybody outside of my
family”
