2. - how Ando’s approach his “CRITICAL REGIONALISM ?
In the article “Towards a Critical Regionalism,” Frampton defines critical regionalism
as “an architecture of resistance,” seeking “to mediate the impact of universal civilization
with elements derived indirectly from the peculiarities of a particular place,” thus aiming –
“to reflect and serve the limited constituencies in which it was grounded.
- Kenneth frampton wrote that :-we find him writing in an essay entitled, "From Self-
Enclosed Modern Architecture toward Universality," :-
Born and bred in Japan, I do my architectural work here. And I suppose it would be possible
To say that the method I have selected is to apply the vocabulary and techniques developed
by an open, universalist Modernism in an enclosed realm of individual lifestyles and
regional differentiation. But it seems difficult to me to attempt to express the sensibilities,
customs, aesthetic awareness, distinctive culture, and social traditions of a given race by
means of an open, internationalis vocabulary of Modernism

- 1 Ando As a Critical Regionalist :-
3. “Tadao Ando,The Japan Architect &Materials,
ANDO wrote of his Koshino Residence in 1981:
Light changes expressions with time. I believe
that the architectural materials do not end with
wood and concrete that have tangible forms but
go beyond to include light and wind which app-
eal to our senses. . . . Detail exists as the most impor-
tant element in expressing identity

4. “Tadao Ando,The Japan Architect &Regionalizing of concrete :-
- In his small courtyard block houses, often set within dense urban fabric, Ando employs concrete in
such a way as to stress the taut homogeneity of its surface rather than its weight, since for him it "is the
most suitable material for realizing surfaces created by rays of sunlight. . . (where).. . walls become
abstract, are negated, and approach the ultimate limit of space. Their actuality is lost, and only the
space they enclose gives a sense of really
existing."
kenneth frampton .1
- Ando is somehow similar to Le Corbusier in using concrete . Ando in his way to learn architecture
he traced Le Corbusier works although it complicated but he succeeded to drew it .- Ando reach a
level in using concrete that elaborate him to REGIONALIZED and cultivate it in japan where nature
are mold with the society, culture and building .
- Here is a question come through minds Ando is a regionalism but is he a critical ? ?

5. “Tadao Ando as a Japanese Architect:-,
- Ando said :- “ the different between my architecture and western
architecture lies in the understanding the nature we Japanese accept
nature and live in harmony with it , western people try to protect
themselves from nature . in his mid-thirties he try to create an
international architecture that can only be conceived by someone
Japanese. 2

6. 2- Ando as a Phenomenologist:-
- We think he is a PHENOMENOLOGIST because he cares about users, their unconscious
Connection to architecture; and this achieved by embedded THE PSYCHOLOGY of users
Within our consideration. This is so much the psychological phenomena what’s called “fast
And frugal “as THE PSYCHOLOGIST and they defined it as the ADAPTIVE UNCONSC -
IOUSNESS. 3
- He try to engaged people with different experiences by his architecture.
- We think that he as a Japanese architect involve architecture with a social mission through
Finding a way to continue Japanese tradition – as he saw that it was lost after world war II-
Concept and values and thereby pass them onto the next generation.
- In one of his projects in Kyoto we find him also try to recreate the feeling of small streets.
He say “you walk through elaborate like structures you don’t know how much of it building
Or how much of it a nature; cause you constantly go in and out of interior and exterior
Spaces. This is his main concept for this project; he described his architecture as “Quiet
Building standing quietly in nature”. He also incorporates the psychic and mentality of users
Like JUHANI PALLASMAA, who addresses the psychic apprehension of architecture? He
Talks about "Opening up a view into a second reality of perception, dreams, forgotten
Memories and Imagination." In his work, this is accomplished through an abstract
"Architecture of silence."

7. - Ando and Pallasma are They are compatible, as phenomenologist ,
but in the other hand we find out a critique by the phenomenologist
Norberg-Schulz’s was dissatisfaction with ando work IN vitra

8. “Tadao Ando as a Japanese Architect:-,
3- Ando as a Futurism:-
- he said :- in our generation scientific and technical advance is so significant specially in west
where architecture is almost totally condition by it , in the next generation I feel that the role of
nature will become just an important .3
- Meaningful of the building :-
“I had the image” he says “of a building that is at one with the sea”
4- How Ando response to Modern architecture:-
Since World War II Western architecture He thinks that Japanese culture was heavily
Influenced By the west many old and good things not talking about external things ;
Such as form and Materials but a way of thinking.
The prime emphasis and economy and function have served to obscure the real aim of
Modern architecture, each of construction and efficiency have become over emphasized at
The expense of spatial richness, symbolism AND ORNAMENT were both eliminated, with
Such a reduction Modern movement start to pause the enjoyment of human life he said that in
The course of my development as an architect I have try to re-examine all this elements that
Were eliminated and bring them back into my architecture. 2
