How does your media
product represent
particular social
groups?
By Findlay Young
2. Social Groups and
Representation
S social groups are groups of people that have similar interests and
spend a lot of time together, they often share interests such as music,
fashion, age and sex.
S To be able to represent a social group in a music magazine you have
to portray the featured artists and the genre of the magazine in a
certain way. You can do this through lots of ways for example the style
of magazine and the clothes that the cover artists are wearing and the
style they follow.
3. Front Cover
S For my Music magazine, I aimed at creating an RnB magazine. My magazine
represents people who have an interest in RnB, have an African American
background and social groups who have had a life time involved with crime.
S RnB: my front cover represents people with an interest into RnB
because of the layout and the vocabulary. RnB magazines are
usually slick and aligned. Words such as ‘Dank’ appeal to RnB
fans. Also the cover lines appeal to RnB fans because they are all
artists involved with the genre RnB.
S African Americans: the front cover represents African Americans
because the starring artist is an African American. Terence
BadBoyRinsa is from Zimbabwe but grew up in American. This
appeals to anyone from African who has grew up or lives in
American because they share that interest of starting a new life in
a different country.
S Life Time of Crime: this front cover appeals and represents to
people who have had a troubled life time because the main feature
on the artist who’s on the front cover is about his life time of
crime, which led to his death and a young age. This can relate to
people who have also experienced a life time of crime.
4. Contents Page
S For my Music magazine, I aimed at creating an RnB magazine. My
magazine represents people who have an interest in RnB, have an African
American background and social groups who have had a life time involved
with crime.
S RnB: My contents page represents who have an interest in RnB because
the contents page informs the reader on all the new RnB article that will
be in the magazine. If the reader enjoys RnB, the contents page Informs
them on what page the RnB articles/features are on. The photo also
portrays two RnB artists who are at the top of their game/charts. Also
words such as ‘Dank’ stand out because its vocabulary that RnB artists
use.
S African American: My contents page appeals to people with an African
American background because it includes RnB artists that have an African
background. For example Terence Babarinsa and Kid Ink. The contents
page informs the reader of articles about that African American artist and
what page they are on.
S Life of Crime: similar to the African American part, the contents page
informs the reader of what page artists are on and what page they talk
about challenges in their life or their life in general. It also gives an image
of my artist (Terence Babarinsa) of a highlight in his life after his struggle
5. Article Page
S For my Music magazine, I aimed at creating an RnB magazine. My
magazine represents people who have an interest in RnB, have an African
American background and social groups who have had a life time involved
with crime.
S RnB: my article represents people who have an interest in RnB because
the article itself is about a young up and coming RnB star. The article
represents RnB because it talks about how RnB changed a young mans
life. The article also includes the artist 50 Cent, one of the most famous
artists in the world. This would appeal to RnB fans because he’s an eye
catching name and performer.
S African Americans: my article represents African Americans because it talks
about my cover artist growing up in Harare, Zimbabwe. The article talks
about the struggle of growing up in two different country’s and adapting to
the different cultures. This represents African Americans because they
have experienced that challenge as well.
S Life Time of Crime: my article appeals and represents people who have
had a life time of crime because the article is about my cover artist going to
prison, being involved in prison and finding away out of the crime with the
music industry. It provides an insight into how the artist got out of a life time
of crime. It shows someone else who’s involve with crime, the importance
of getting out early because it’s a dangerous world with crime life. My
artist’s life is an example of this in the article.
