Editor's Notes
Let’s consider the problem space when it comes to Virtualization Management.First is being able to Detect, Diagnose and Resolve Problems. Virtualization introduces new operational challenges brought on by shared resources and the multiple components that support the virtual infrastructure. Second, it’s difficult to plan for growth and change. How do you know that capacity you have today will serve the organization next week or next month, particularly as resources are shared in a more abstract manner.Next, administrators are often unable to associate costs for the use of infrastructure. With virtualization we lose the physical dependency between an application and a server, and it can be difficult understand who is using what resources. These resources are expensive, so many organizations are taking a closer look at Chargeback so they can understand and recoup costs.Last is being able to connect business systems to IT infrastructure. What’s needed is an understanding of how infrastructure components support these key business systems, such SLAs can be defined to communicate service availability to the business, service health to the system owner and infrastructure problems to IT.
OPTIONAL Let’s take a moment to review the key challenges that contribute to the problem of being able to detect, diagnose and resolve problems.Clarity, Expertise and Relationships each play a contributing role to the problem.Organizations often struggle to understand the relationships and interactions between infrastructure components, reducing clarity in being able to diagnose problems. They also can’t understand the impact one problem VM has on the next and on resources as a whole.
OPTIONAL The next problem we examine is that planning for growth and change can be difficult.Understanding utilization versus allocation, scoping future requirements and finding wasted resources are key challenges for capacity planners in a virtual environment. Again, abstraction plays a role in masking what is really going on. In addition, growth in the environment is increasing with virtualization and necessitates more frequent reviews. Forecast reporting and trend alerting would solve these challenges, but most organizations lack the tools to enable these to happen.
The next problem that comes into play is being able to associate costs for the use of infrastructure.Enabling business system owners to understand the costs of the infrastructure that support the systems, today and in the future, is a key challenge for IT. Articulating why IT appears to be expensive to the business is also challenging, when frequently those costs cannot be linked back to systems the businesses use day-to-day.In order to link those costs, the organization must first agree to a methodology, then begin tracking utilization not just by host or group, but by business system, and finally charge in an equitable way.
OPTIONAL The last problem that organizations struggle with is connecting business systems to the infrastructure and constructing measurable SLAs.Being able to define what components support key services, then measuring and reporting on service quality, health and availability present new challenges. This is due to the layered nature of virtualization and the lack of tools that help you visualize these relationships and dependencies in meaningful ways.
As a result the Ideal Solution to addressing the problems of virtualization management are as follows: Performance Monitoring – to detect, diagnose and resolve problems Capacity Planning – to plan for growth and change Chargeback – to associate costs for the use of infrastructure Service Management – to connect business SLAs to infrastructure
vFoglight provides Performance Monitoring that enables administrators to detect and diagnose problems to help speed mean-time-to-resolution (MTTR).We provide Expert Alerts that incorporate industry expertise. And unlike others who provide only threshold-based alerts, we offer predictive, best practice, behavioral and conditional alerts to provide a complete understanding of performance, availability, capacity and service quality problems.Architectural representations show the relationships and interactions between components. And vFoglight uses a unique visual paradigm that uses color coding and movement to direct the eye to problem areas.More than 5,000 customers use vFoglight for performance monitoring.

Service-based dashboards and reports show service health and availability. Also through service-based alarms, vFoglight can show resource consumption and more.vFoglight has offered service Management since the first version of the product. With vFoglight 6.0 we have introduced auto-generated business views and services, aiding ease of use and time to value even more.
vFoglight provides Chargeback to help track infrastructure utilization so costs can be recovered for the services provided.vFoglight supports industry chargeback models like Tiered Flat Rate, Measured Resource Utilization (Both partial and full cost recovery), and Direct Costs. We use models to allocate costs to services and allow users to provide “billing” reports. These reports can be leveraged by finance for internal or external use.vFoglight was one of the original virtualization management solutions to provide chargeback and with support for industry models endorsed by Gartner, making it an easy choice over solutions that use no standards.
vFoglight is the market-leading solution for virtualization monitoring with more than 6,500 customers worldwide. We also serve SMB organizations through large enterprises.vFoglight is VMware Ready Optimized, which is an endorsement from VMware for virtualization monitoring. We support vSphere and prior platforms and extends vCenter Server. The product offers high value by providing performance monitoring, capacity planning, chargeback and service management, all in a low cost solution. vFoglight is easy to install and use and offers a scalable architecture to support your organization as it evolves and grows. With vFoglight you can also add application, database and end user monitoring to provide additional insight to performance and availability of key business services and applications.
