2. Appearance The Antarctic snow petrel is a small pigeon sized bird with pure white feathers it has a black beak, black eyes and black webbed feet. It is known to be the most beautiful of all Antarctic birds.
3. Habitat A Snow Petrels nest in wide areas. They build their nests inside big cracks in rocks, the bedding is made from smaller rocks. They are also known as “nunataks’ they live in the far inland of Antarctica.
4. Food Snow petrels travel in groups to the closest oceans or lakes. They mostly feed on krill but would also eat fish, squid, crustaceans and scavenging dead whales.
5. Movement Snow Petrels are magnificent flyers they fly low when over water and fly high when over land to avoid any creatures below that try and take them. They have a very gentle movement.
6. Behaviour Snow Petrels are usually encountered in hundredths and rarely in thousands. They start searching for mates in spring and once the female has had a baby the baby is born with light grey feathers but when it gets older they develop pure white ones.
7. Life Style A snow Petrel will stay in its egg for approximately a month. The eggs a usually laid in November and hatch in January. Snow Petrels can live up to twenty years in the wild and have six natural enemies.
