Buyer beware the way food is marketed
1. Buyer Beware? The Way Food is Marketed
I was recently reminded of a 2009 nutrition-related lawsuit, when a California woman opened a
lawsuit against the makers of “Nutella”, the delicious, chocolatey spread that tastes way too good
to actually be good for you.
Her argument was that Nutella had been marketed as part of a “heatlhy breakfast” and its high
amounts of fat and sugars should not be classified as “healthy”. While many of our readers may
think: “Well of course Nutella isn’t healthy”, we have to consider those who don’t have proper
nutrition education (due to the failure of the health education teachers, poor parenting, lack of
common sense, or some combination of the three).
In that case, is it the responsibility of the brand to display some ethics and not misrepresent the
nutritional value of a food? I think so.
Nutella, which has a seemingly tremendous, cult-like following has done a great job of marketing
itself throughout the years. The Italian brand somehow has built a tremendous Facebook
following, albeit mostly in European countries. So an international brand of this magnitude
doesn’t want to go the way of high-fructose corn syrup and be thrown in the spotlight for its bad
nutritional value.
So, in the years since the lawsuit, has Nutella changed its marketing angle?
…Not really.
They seem to have addressed the nutrition issue, as the first link on a Google ad is “Nutella and
Nutrition”. While they don’t outright say “there are better choices for breakfast”, they do mention
that Nutella should be consumed as part of a balanced breakfast.
From Nutella.com:
“When used in moderation with complementary foods, Nutella® can form a part of a balanced
meal. It is a quick and easy way to encourage kids to eat whole grains, such as whole wheat
toast, English muffins, toaster waffles and bagels.”
So what it comes down to is we really have to study everything that we consume, and be more
selective in our daily nutrition choices. Just because something says it might be “healthy” or
“nutritious” doesn’t mean it is entirely true. Do your research. Read the label. And if you’re just
