Roman meals

Usually, the Romans used to eat twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, as the doctors
of the day recommended for a healthy life. Only the gourmands ate four times a day.

Breakfast was served after sunrise. It
was very light and sometimes the
Romans didn’t sit down when they
had breakfast. It consisted of fruit
                                                         and bread, water, and sometimes
they ate the leftovers of the previous
night. Among the things they also
had for breakfast I mention milk,
olives, eggs, cheese and honey, and
                                                         for children bread and fats.

Lunch was a secondary meal when the Romans ate light food, such as bread and cheese or fish,
eggs, meat, vegetables. It was considered rude to have a rich lunch. The philosopher Seneca
used to say that he ate only bread and some figs at lunch.

Dinner was the main meal of the day. It started
at 5 p.m. and it lasted till evening or till night.
The main food was puls – some boiled cereals
with oil and vegetables. With it they ate
                                               vegetables, especially fresh cabbage which
they considered to be very healthy, beans,
milk, cheese, fruit and wine. They seldom ate
meat, especially when they made sacrifices or
                                               during holidays.

                                                            The Romanian team from Drobeta
