IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP
OR CHALLENGE FORMS &
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?
By Hentrik Damzi
Sports Drama Films
 I looked at other media
products similar to the same
genre that I have chosen. I
looked at sports drama films
such as Cinderella Man and
Undefeated. The films gave me
a good insight on how to use,
challenge and develop forms
and conventions of real media
products, and the elements that
would be needed in order to
fulfil this goal.
Institution Logos
 I conducted research on the opening of the famous
boxing film, Rocky Balboa(2006), where we see two
institutional logos appear. The first institutional logo is
Columbia Pictures which has bright connotations,
making it more appealing to the audience. The second
logo in this film has lots of vibrant animations which
make the ‘Revolution’ title stand out.
Institutional Logos
The screenshots above show the animations of our institution
logo, ‘Kinetic Media’. As you can see we have animated our
logo using Motion, giving the logo a simple but at the same
time interesting look. The logo was inspired by the institutional
research that I carried out. The animations are similar to the
‘Revolution’ institutional logo and the bright variable colours
inspired by the ‘Columbia Pictures’ logo. We did this to show
that our logo is at the highest quality and that we have the
editorial resources to execute this final logo.
Titles
 The titles we used are very similar to the titles used in
Rocky Balboa. They are in big bold letters and appear
for around 2 seconds then fade out quickly. Below are
the titles from our film and Rocky Balboa, highlighting
these similarities.

The Weigh In (Our
Film)
Rocky Balboa
Costumes
 The costumes we had the main character wear were a
hoodie and a thins late hat in one scene and in another
a vest. During both scenes he also wears running
shoes. The protagonists costumes are clear genre
signifiers as the running shoes show that he is an
athlete and the thins late hat and hoodie is a
combination often seen when boxers go out running.
The vest signifies that he is working out and that he
does not want to have too many layers on as he is going
to get sweaty.
Lighting
 The lighting in our film opening is significant as it paints
a bigger picture to the audience and foreshadows the
narrative. The way the spotlight is on our protagonist
has more than just a visual meaning but also a
metaphorical one. The spotlight signifies how the film is
focused on him and that he is on a journey to success
alone, isolated, the same way the spotlight seems to
isolate him from the rest of the world. It also shows to
the audience how when he is training he is in his own
zone, own world and determined not to let anything
distract him.
Props
 The props we use, such as the boxing gloves and mitts,
signify the genre and immediately clarify the narrative to
the audience that it is about a boxer. This is similar to
many other media conventions who use their props to
signify the genre. For example in the opening of
Cinderella Man the boxing ring signifies to the audience
that it is a boxing film, despite the alluding title.
