1. e-TESOL
What’s ESL? English as a Second Language
What’s EFL? English as a Foreign Language
What’s TESL? Teaching English as a Second
Language.
What’s TEFL? Teaching English as a Foreign
Language.
What’s TESOL? Teaching English to
Speakers of other languages.
2. What’s e-TESOL?
“e-TESOL” is generated and adopted, because
“e” is nowadays frequently prefixed to many
words or terms to represent the integration of
information technology(IT) to specific expressions
or concepts, such as e-generation,
e-commerce, e-trade, e-store, e-mail,
e-card, e-portfolio, e-learning, e-schooling,
etc.
3. All the e’s at the beginning of the new
terms refer to “electronic”-using
technology, specifically the Web or
telecommunications, to deliver or process
specified activities.
Therefore, the term of e-TESOL for this
class mainly indicates teaching English as
a second or foreign language through
electronic technologies, especially the
Internet, the Web, or the Net.
4. The ministry of Education(MOE) has been promoting
the integration of information technology to different
subjects, including English, as one of the top priorities
for school.
“computer idiots”
or e-trads(Slang for someone who is ignorant of the
workings of email and the Internet)
6. Why e-TESOL?
English is no longer just an international
languages; it has become the global language.
For anyone who wants or needs to participate
directly in today’s increasingly globalized
culture, English is now a basic requirement.
For this reason, learning English has become a
primary educational goal for large numbers of
people almost everywhere on earth.

The traditional school policy of beginning
English instruction in the 7th grade has already
been seriously questioned an challenged.
Many pre-school children are unofficially
beginning to learn the language, and students
in elementary school are starting to officially
study English as foreign language from the 3rd
grade. Some local governments are initiating
English instruction in the 1st grade.
11. Why e-TESOL?
Due to the influence of paper-and-pencil-test-driven
formats on classroom instruction, TEFL in Taiwan is
generally focused on languages usage, not use. The
English language is, for the most part, learned
passively as a school subject, not as a communication
tool.
Although the facilities and the environments for English
learning are getting better nowadays, opportunities for
students to use the language are still limited.
12. 1. What action should be taken?
2. What teaching methods and what
technologies can be used to confront
the challenges we face?
In fact, ESL/EFL teachers have a variety of
alternatives.
In terms of teaching methods, many approaches are
now available to anyone who wants to take the time to
read up on them. The most important recent shift in
TESOL methodology has been the increased
emphasis on approaches aimed at improving learners’
communicative abilities.
Thus, the ruling trend, currently, is toward
communicative language teaching (CLT).
14. What has happened is the
development of the Internet
because it provides a more powerful learning
environment than any other technology-based
formats can.
Internet-based technology provides an
invaluable tool for ESL/EFL teachers who are
trying to put theories and concepts of CLT into
practice.
15. Why e-TESOL?
ESL/EFL learners can benefit from
many international networks of
schools and programs that provide:
1. a platform for authentic language use;
2. a structured setting for communication;
3. an integrated context for collaborative/ cooperative
learning;
4. a real audience for reading and writing for purpose;
5. a culturally diverse community for language
enhancement; and
6. a resource for plentiful authentic materials

20. There are dozens of reasons why
e-TESOL is wanted and needed. Nine
of these are explored below.
To facilitate Communicative Language Teaching
To catch up with the Age of Information Technology
To promote Acculturation
To Stimulate Learning Motivations
To Facilitate Flexibility
To Increase the Students’ Exposure to the Target
Language
To Facilitate Collaborative Instruction
To Support Lifelong Learning
To Enhance Global Views
