      Rethink Education…
Education is a unique and life changing opportunity for the teacher as well as the taught. A teacher is not just an
instructor but a role model and a mind moulder for a whole generation. Think about the madarsas across the world,
blaring out propaganda and enrolling the faithful en masse.

Over the years, teaching in India has won for itself the dubious distinction of being the most boring job and also the
least paid. Often people dismiss education in India as a legacy of the British who needed to mass produce self-
important clerks to carry out boring transactions in English in dreary government offices across small towns and
tehsils across the sub-continent. Obviously, "It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely
      uneducated."

Is that what we have been inflicting upon generations of Indians? Scratch the surface and you’ll realize the scenario
is even worse. Many parents today are opting for home schooling over dragging their child through hell and high
water to get them admitted to a “good” (read socially acceptable) school or college. Many students who are learning
at home are also doing very well. The recent breakthrough by a Delhi boy, 14-year-old Sahal Kaushik who is the
youngest Indian to crack the IIT entrance exams is a tale that cannot be dismissed lightly. He was home schooled by
his mother! Cities like Bangalore and Pune have scores of kids who are learning at home, helped by their parents.
These kids are not being pushed into learning everything like in a school therefore, they are less burdened and
pursue a more fruitful education that is focused around the areas of their strength and interest - the results are not
      bad at all.

Does that mean that institutionalized education is on its way out? Not really. Educational institutes are important
and a child needs to go to a school to be able to grow socially as a person. It is important to be a part of an institute to
be able to understand the competition that he/she will have to face in the future. Shutting down of institutionalized
education would leave us with the problem of dealing with the asocial and withdrawn.

However, our education system needs to change and there are no two ways about it. The one-way interaction in the
classrooms has to give way to a clear two-way transaction. As teachers and academicians, we have to understand
that the focal point of any classroom is the students. They are our customers and they need to be satisfied and
happy when they go home. We need them to be excited to come back to the classrooms everyday for roughly a
      decade-and-a-half if not more.

Our approach towards teaching needs to be more investigative and project-oriented. Instead of teaching from the
books let your students try out other possibilities like experimenting, questioning, creating and research-based
outcomes. Let the education they get be useful and fruitful – something they can apply in real life years after they
have left their classrooms and moved on.

A lot of work is being done in this direction and many schools in big cities are adopting such training methodologies.
However, it is the small towns and cities that supply maximum manpower to the hubs that need help.

This is where vocational training is most sought after. Here is where i360 can make a huge difference. Vocational
training needs to be hands-on and relevant. This is the general target that we need to achieve at our centers across
India. We need to program our courses into self help modules where the students can learn from their own
mistakes. Projects, internships, simulated environments and scenario-based learning as well as game and activity
based teaching can work wonders here.

We have the power to turn the students who come to us into achievers - people who are sought after by the industry
and feted by their peers. To achieve this, we need to walk off the beaten track and think out of the box, to spark
interest, to draw the students back to us again and again. After all, someone has aptly put, “I like a teacher who gives
you something to take home to think about besides homework” and therein lies the success mantra.

As teachers and academicians, we have to understand that the focal point of any classroom is the students. They are our customers and they need to be satisfied and happy when they go home. We need them to be excited to come back to the classrooms everyday for roughly a decade-and-a-half if not more. Our approach towards teaching needs to be more investigative and project-oriented. Instead of teaching from the books let your students try out other possibilities like experimenting, questioning, creating and research-based outcomes. Let the education they get be useful and fruitful – something they can apply in real life years after they have left their classrooms and moved on. A lot of work is being done in this direction and many schools in big cities are adopting such training methodologies. However, it is the small towns and cities that supply maximum manpower to the hubs that need help. This is where vocational training is most sought after. Here is where i360 can make a huge difference. Vocational training needs to be hands-on and relevant. This is the general target that we need to achieve at our centers across India. We need to program our courses into self help modules where the students can learn from their own mistakes. Projects, internships, simulated environments and scenario-based learning as well as game and activity based teaching can work wonders here. We have the power to turn the students who come to us into achievers - people who are sought after by the industry and feted by their peers. To achieve this, we need to walk off the beaten track and think out of the box, to spark interest, to draw the students back to us again and again. After all, someone has aptly put, “I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework” and therein lies the success mantra. Shoma Chakraborty
