This document provides information about a staff development training on the use of audience response systems (ARS). The training will take place on January 28th from 2-4pm in room 173 of the Pavillion Oceania building. The training will discuss the advantages of ARS for actively engaging participants, increasing understanding, and getting feedback. It also provides examples of different types of questions that can be used with ARS, such as multiple choice, application, critical thinking, and monitoring questions. Challenges of using ARS and additional features are also mentioned.

application questions
These questions require participants to apply their knowledge and
understanding to particular situations and contexts. Application
questions often ask participants to make a decision or choice in a
given scenario, connect course content to "real-world" situations,
implement procedures or techniques, or predict the outcome of
experiments or even their peers' response to a subsequent
question.

Monitoring Questions: These are questions designed to provide
instructors with information about how their participants are approaching
the learning process in their courses. f.e. did they read the information and
documents prior to come to the course.
Experiment questions
Audience response systems can also be used to collect data from
participants for classroom experiments often used in the social sciences (cf.
Gender)
Repeated questions
These are questions before and after to track if the participant made
learning progress or changed perspective.
