17. The Three-Crisis Rule “ When traveling in a mission team internationally, the team should always keep the 3-crisis rule in mind. The rule is simply this: Assume that three things for each individual will go wrong no matter how well we plan. Adopt the attitude that contingencies will arise. Who knows what they will be? Someone may become ill. The bus may break down or the rooms at the hotel may have been given away. When you begin the trip with this attitude, you are preparing to be flexible as well as facing the fact that you cannot always be in control or trust your own strength. Encourage one another to practice the mental attitude of accepting both the minor and major changes in plans that inevitably occur with foreign travel. If nothing goes “wrong” with your team, fine. But you will have missed some rewarding opportunities to see the Lord work. Difficulties give you the opportunity to discover your inner resolve. And in the face of adversity, the hidden strengths and talents that emerge in some can surprise the team.”

37. 7. Refrain from complaining. I know that travel can present numerous unexpected and undesired circumstances, but the rewards of conquering such circumstances are innumerable. Instead of whining and complaining, I’ll be creative and supportive. 8. Respect the work that is going on in the country with the particular church, agency, or person(s) that we are working with. I realize that our team is here for just a short while, but that those with whom we work are here for the long term. I will respect their knowledge, insights and instructions. 9. Refrain from negative political comments or hostile discussions concerning out host country, their culture or their politics. 10. Remember not to be exclusive in my relationships. If my sweetheart or spouse is on the team, we will make every effort to interact with all members of the team, not just one another. If I am attracted to a teammate, I will not attempt to pursue an exclusive relationship until after we return home. 11. Refrain from any activity that could be construed as romantic interest toward a National. I realize certain activities that seem innocuous in my own culture may seem inappropriate in others.
