INTRODUCTION
The laboratory is central to science instruction .It is the library that students learn to handle
apparatus, think independently and to draw conclusions on the basis of exeperiments and
observation.one of the important function of science laboratory is the depending of students
understanding that scientific concepts and application are closely related tohis own natural
environment.Practical work in science even at the school stages is essential because of the fact that
we’learn by doing’.Scientific principles and applications are thus rendered more meaningful. Moreover
it is a fact that an object that handled impresses itself firmly on the mnd than an object merely seen
from a distance or illustration .Most children like doing things with their hand.
IMPORTANCE OF SCIENCE LABORATORY
5
Laboratory work is an essential component on science education .scientific theories and
Practical work in science are the two sides of a coin .These two aspects of science education should
Supplement and compliment each other. Without experiments ,the students cannot experience the
reality
of science. The development of powers of observation ,measurement, drawing inferences are all depend
on laboratory work. Laboratory work help to realize the process-oriented objective of science teaching.
The main objective are
1. Making abstract scientific understanding concrete.
2.Development of scientific concepts and theories.
3.Development of scientific skills ,attitudes, interest and appreciation.
4.Training in scientific method.
5.Awekening the maintenance of curiosity in the environment.
ORGANISATION OF SCIENCELABORATORY
Inorder to make the practical work most effective, the science teacher should always keep in mind the
Different aspects of laboratory work.
i. There should be coordination of theoretical and practical work.
ii. Experiments should neither be too difficult nor too easy.
iii. The purpose of experiment should be made clear to pupil.
iv. A faithful record of the experiments should be made clear to pupils.
v. Pupil’s work should be keenly observed by the teacher.
vi. Experiments should be well graded according to age, intelligence etc.
SELECTION AND PURCHASE OF APPARATUS ,CHEMICALS AND EQUIPMENTS
6
The list of apparatus and chemicals to be purchased must be purchased with the details of the
experiments to be performed by the pupil and demonstrated by the teacher .It is better to buy a few
additional articals to guard aganist breakages. The number of units of costly apparatus may be reduced
and pupil may be allowed to work in combination. The list of apparatus divided in to
(1)Essentials and (2)Desirables
In preparing list due consideration should be paid to all parts of the subject. The teacher may not be
tempted by the attractive descriptions and catalogues. When the essentials have been purchased ,the
teacher might think of getting down desirables.
After finalising the list , the teacher or the Headmaster will invite quotations from science firms. It is
always best to deal with firms that supply the best available materials. The teacher can also visit the
factories or showrooms of the dealers to get a correct idea of the nature of supply. If possible the teacher
might select the apparatus himself and get them pack in his presence so as to avoid the trouble of
sending back unsuitable materials.
In ordering goods, full specialisations of the articles required should be given. For example, jars
and dishes. One or two large purchase a year is preferable .Raw materials like timber, metallic
sheets ,rods, wires and tool may be bought to best advantages from local leaders. Particular care must
be excercised in the choice of glassware. They should be mechanically strong and resistant to chemical
action as well as temperature.

CONCLUSION
Laboratory work is an essential component of scienceeducation .The achievements of modern science
are mainly due to the application of experimental method.Laboratory helps the pupil in the
development of manipulative skills. In the laboratory the teacher comes in to closer contact with the
individual and helps them to bring out their difficulties .It helps the pupil to develope the manipulative
skills in pupil.
