6. GHG or Green House Gas, has been at the forefront of
international concern for than two decades. With
baseline in 1990, the Kyoto Protocol is an
International Environment Treaty, representing
agreement that industrialized countries reduce their
collective emissions of greenhouse gases* by 5.2%.
The United States, among others, agreed to reach 6%
GHG reduction by 2012. We have less than three
years to comply. * greenhouse gas (GHG): a gas in the atmosphere (natural or manmade)

that absorbs and emits radiation to contribute to climate change (global
warming), including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide
(N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur
hexafluoride (SF6).

8. Reports At The 20 Year Mark - Not So Good
large decreases in snowpack, earlier snowmelt, winter
rain events, increased peak winter flows and
flooding, and reduced summer flows.
Reduced water supplies coupled with increases in demand
are likely to exacerbate competition for over-allocated
water resources.
Moderate climate change in the early decades …Major
challenges are projected for crops that are near the
warm end of their suitable range or which depend on
highly utilized water resources.
Vulnerability to climate change is likely to be concentrated
in specific groups and regions, including indigenous
peoples and others dependent on narrow resource
bases, and the poor and elderly in cities.

9. WHAT IS THE G20?
-- A group of 20 energy and environment ministers comprising member
nations of the Gleneagles Dialogue. It is different from the G20 grouping of
finance ministers and central bank governors.
WHICH COUNTRIES ARE MEMBERS?
-- Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India,
Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, South Africa,
South Korea, Spain, the United States, and the European Union
(represented by Slovenia, which holds the rotating presidency).
WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT TO THE CLIMATE DEBATE?
-- The G20 emits almost 20 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, or about 78
percent of global emissions. G8 nations contribute 45 percent of this, other
members contribute 33 percent.
-- The U.S. (23 percent) and China (16 percent) are the G20's greatest
individual emitters.

11. The five principal concepts of the Kyoto Protocol are:
• Commitments- the reduction of greenhouse gases that are
legally binding
• Implementation- countries are required to prepare policies
and measures for the reduction of greenhouse gases in
their respective countries[…] -utilize all mechanisms
available, such as joint implementation, the clean
development mechanism and emissions trading
• Minimizing Impacts on Developing Countries by
establishing an adaptation fund for climate change.
• Accounting, Reporting and Review in order to ensure the
integrity of the Protocol.
• Compliance, Establishing a Compliance Committee to
enforce compliance

12. According to a recent article on CLIMATEBIZ: http://www.climatebiz.com/news/2008/11/18/ict-could-cut-us-
emissions-22-percent-save-billions
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Properly deployed information and communications
technology (ICT) could cut U.S.-based carbon dioxide emissions by as
much as 22 percent by 2020, according to new research.
ICT could also save the country up to $240 billion in gross energy and fuel
costs, according to the Boston Consulting Group and The Climate Group.
The organizations unveiled the U.S. addendum to a previously released
report called quot;SMART 2020: Enabling the low carbon economy in the
information age, quot; which used a global scope.
The original report found that ICT's global carbon footprint could nearly
double by 2020, but it has the potential to help other sectors cut
emissions up to five times that amount. An examination of opportunities
in the U.S. focused on four areas of technology that already exist: A smart
electrical grid, efficient road transportation, smart buildings, and travel
substitution…

20. Understand business goals and IT contribution.
Each year the network consumes >100 billion kWh of electricity* – goal is to reduce by 30%
The EPA estimates that the forecasted energy usage can be cut by up to 70% - using current technology
Match Infrastructure to SLAs – goal is to reduce wasted bandwidth and space or to up sell service to capability,
thereby reducing 20% waste
Define IT goals as discreet business milestones; transition to technology types, adoption of improved devices
Create foundation Capabilities for Cloud Computing, Web 2.0, SOA and SaaS
Avoid costly layoff of workers by incenting the “pink” to retool skills to meet current project demands:
The scope of so-called green-collar job opportunities stretches across industries, from labor positions to executive roles. Studies suggest that renewable
energy industries alone could generate thousands of jobs, and local executives in those growing industries said they expect employment to jump in the
coming years.
Berkeley Palmer, a career firm with offices in Overland Park, said in a statement that “green jobs have the potential of trending up at a faster pace
than any other job sector” and that those opportunities will cross most industries. …
McGraw-Hill Construction has found the number of green building starts increased five-fold from 2005-2008. Researchers note in their report that such
starts could triple by 2013. Looks like green building is getting traction. http://networking.bizjournals.com/

29. Of the 18 companies studied in
the scorecard, only Sharp,
Fujitsu Siemens, and Philips are
fully committed to reducing
emissions by 30 percent before
2020.
Greenpeace singles out Lenovo and Microsoft in particular on energy issues,
although many of the companies surveyed have significant room for
improvement. Microsoft, which earned second-to-last place in the ranking
this time around with a 2.9 score, gets praised for reporting its total
emissions and using renewable energy for 24 percent of its operations, but
earns little other praise. Lenovo, scoring just above Microsoft with 3.7, lost
points for not having all its computers meet Energy Star standards.
Rounding out the bottom for the fifth time in a row is Nintendo, which has
shown little movement since it entered the scorecard rankings in December
2007. Greenpeace criticizes the company for everything but its reduction of
toxic chemicals in manufacturing, and notes that although the company has
committed to reducing its overall emissions by 2 percent every year, an
increase in business drove emissions up by 6 percent in 2006.

33. Carbon offsets allow companies to reduce their
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions liability by
purchasing the emission reductions made by another
entity. Each carbon offset purchased represents the
equivalent of one ton of carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions avoided. There are multiple standards that
evaluate the quality of these offsets, including the
Gold Standard, the Voluntary Carbon Standard, the
Climate Action Reserve, and regulatory standards
defined under cap-and-trade schemes.
RECs allow companies to meet renewable energy
goals, support renewable power projects, and
demonstrate a commitment to clean, renewable
electricity. RECs are measured in terms of electricity
production and each REC represents one MWh of
electricity produced from renewable energy
resources. The standards for evaluating RECs (such as
Green-e®) are different than those applied to offsets.
