You want to tell someone else what
the dog said:
There are two ways of doing this:
You can repeat the dog’s words ( direct speech):
The dog said, “I’m happy”
You can use reported speech: ( indirect speech)
The dog said (that) he was happy.
6. The statements that the woman on the left says, are in
direct or reported speech?
Which are the reporting verbs?
Could you write the statements that the “strange
woman” told to the woman who wears a red t-shirt, the
day before? Could you reproduce their conversation?
Which tenses are used in Direct Speech? And in
reported speech?
7. Reporting verbs:
Say and Tell are the most common reporting verbs.
There is an important difference:
Tell is always followed by a direct object: tell + someone (that) +
reported statement.
It is used to emphasize to whom something is said.
- He told her he was in love . NOT: he told that he was in love
Say is not followed by a direct object: say ( that) + reported
statement.
It is used to emphasize what is said.
- He said he was in love. He said to us he was in love. NOT he said
us that he was in love.
8. Other reporting verbs:
Ask - Reported Questions
We can use ask with or without an indirect object.
When reporting yes/ no questions connect the reported question using ‘if’.
She asked, "Do you want to come with me?"
She asked me if I wanted to come with her.
When reporting questions using question words (why, where, when, etc.) use
the question word.
Dave asked, "Where did you go last weekend?"
Dave asked me where I had gone the previous weekend.
He asked, "Why are you studying English?"
She asked me why I was studying English.

12. Activities
Change these sentences into reported speech or direct

13. Speaking:
In groups of three, one of the members tells
something to his/her partner, and this one tells what it
has been said to the other. The role of the students
changes.
14. Speaking:
Chinese whispers
The class is divided into two groups of 10 students.
The first one reads a paragraph and he/she tells it to
another student. This one tells it to another one, and so
on so forth until the message arrives to the last one who
reproduce the whole message to the rest of the class.
