 Pupils: around 20

 Age: 17 years old

 Level: (CEF) : B1
Objectives
 At the end of the lesson, students should be able to…

 Understand and use of reported speech;
 Understand a listening performed by native speakers;
 Note down the important information of the listening;
 Reproduce what they have heard;
 Work in pairs and in groups;
 What are these women doing?
 Who are they talking about?
Uses:
 You want to tell someone else what
the dog said:
There are two ways of doing this:

 You can repeat the dog’s words ( direct speech):
The dog said, “I’m happy”

 You can use reported speech: ( indirect speech)
The dog said (that) he was happy.
 The statements that the woman on the left says, are in
 direct or reported speech?

 Which are the reporting verbs?

 Could you write the statements that the “strange
 woman” told to the woman who wears a red t-shirt, the
 day before? Could you reproduce their conversation?

 Which tenses are used in Direct Speech? And in
 reported speech?
Reporting verbs:
 Say and Tell are the most common reporting verbs.
There is an important difference:

 Tell is always followed by a direct object: tell + someone (that) +
  reported statement.
It is used to emphasize to whom something is said.

- He told her he was in love . NOT: he told that he was in love

 Say is not followed by a direct object: say ( that) + reported
   statement.
It is used to emphasize what is said.

- He said he was in love. He said to us he was in love. NOT he said
    us that he was in love.
Other reporting verbs:
 Ask - Reported Questions
We can use ask with or without an indirect object.

 When reporting yes/ no questions connect the reported question using ‘if’.

         She asked, "Do you want to come with me?"
         She asked me if I wanted to come with her.

 When reporting questions using question words (why, where, when, etc.) use
  the question word.

          Dave asked, "Where did you go last weekend?"
         Dave asked me where I had gone the previous weekend.

         He asked, "Why are you studying English?"
         She asked me why I was studying English.
Tell, say or ask?
 Write the correct reporting verb:

 Anthony ___________ that he was hungry.
 Tara ____________ me if Tom was ill.
    He __________ everybody that he is French.
 He __________ to me that he was angry.
 The doctor ___________ her: "Lie on the couch."
    She __________, "That's a great idea!"
 He ____________ that it had snowed the week before.
 She ___________ me if I had ever been there.
 James ____________ him to shut up.
    They _____________ what I felt like.
 My mum__________my brother where he had been.

Activities
 Change these sentences into reported speech or direct
  speech:

1- “My name ‘s Dean” –
2- “Do you want a drink?”-
3- They said that they didn’t like their boss -
4- “Will you go out with me?”-
5- “I was lying” –
6- You said that you’d wait for me -
7- “ It may rain” -
8-"He works in a bank" -
9-"I was waiting for the bus when he arrived”-
10-"You should go to bed early”-
11-He asked me if I wanted a drink-
12- He told me that he lied to me the week before-
Speaking:
 In groups of three, one of the members tells
 something to his/her partner, and this one tells what it
 has been said to the other. The role of the students
 changes.
Speaking:
 Chinese whispers
The class is divided into two groups of 10 students.
The first one reads a paragraph and he/she tells it to
 another student. This one tells it to another one, and so
 on so forth until the message arrives to the last one who
 reproduce the whole message to the rest of the class.

                                             Tip:

                                    Use the reported speech
                                      to report what your
                                          partners say.
Listening
