3. What are topic sentences? A topic sentence is usually the first sentence in a paragraph. The topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph will be about.

7. Example of topic sentences First write the numbers 1-6 in your workbook. On the next slide is a piece of text with the topic sentences have circled in red. For each of the 6 paragraphs write down what you think the topic of the paragraph is just from reading the topic sentence. You have 3 minutes for this task.
8. Another example. Write the numbers 1-4 in your workbook. Read the topic sentences for each paragraph numbered 1-4. Don’t read the full article, just the topic sentences. Try to say what the topic of each paragraph is using just one word? You have 2 minutes for this task.
