3. What are topic sentences? A topic sentence is usually the first sentence in a paragraph. The topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph will be about.

5. Topic sentences are used to help when people are scanning for information.

6. Topic sentences help us organise our writing – it means we have to thinkcarefully about the paragraph before we start writing it.

7. Example of topic sentences First write the numbers 1-6 in your workbook. On the next slide is a piece of text with the topic sentences have circled in red. For each of the 6 paragraphs write down what you think the topic of the paragraph is just from reading the topic sentence. You have 3 minutes for this task.

8. Another example. Write the numbers 1-4 in your workbook. Read the topic sentences for each paragraph numbered 1-4. Don’t read the full article, just the topic sentences. Try to say what the topic of each paragraph is using just one word? You have 2 minutes for this task.
