Michelangelo was one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance period, renowned for his sculptures and paintings. Some of his most famous works included the Pietà, David, and paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He worked extensively in sculpture, painting, architecture and poetry. Throughout his career he received commissions from the wealthy Medici family in Florence and later the Papacy in Rome.
