Making citizen science sensor platforms and their measured data accessible to GIS users can be a challenging task. Data has to be discovered, downloaded, and converted before adding it to a GIS project. To facilitate integration and enhance interoperability between sensor platforms and GIS, this work proposes a method for accessing sensor platforms directly through GIS. Our approach implements selected parts of the OGC GeoServices REST API directly on a sensor platform, thus making it a first class node on the Internet of Things. Users can get a live view of what is measured in the field in their GIS.

A standalone low-cost mobile prototype with accurate localization capabilities and communicating environmental measurements in real-time can definitely expand the current picture of urban data characterized by limited spatio-temporal resolution. Sensor data enrichment with kinematics, high-frequency and robust positioning data plays a crucial role in IoT devices for mobile microclimatic monitoring application. Indeed, spatially enriched real time kinematic sensors lead directly to fast, reliable and accurate information over-time. This, in turn, allows to create added-value services (smart cities, transportation, e-health, smart home, social, etc.) for life quality improvement of urban communities. The design, prototyping and experimental activities have got funded the DPS4ESLAB project.

OSGi Community Event 2014 Abstract: At the OSGi Community Event 2014 the OSGi Alliance invited you to visit our OSGi IoT stand in the Eclipse IoT playground where we showed a demo of a wind farm using Raspberry Pi’s and an OSGi Cloud plus OSGi based SaaS. People who brought along their Raspberry Pi (B or B+) to the stand had the opportunity to join the demo and turn their Raspberry Pi's into a ‘virtual’ windmill. We hosted a OSGi Extended Session to explore this demo and launch a hackathon competition. Attendees participated in the OSGi IoT demo, using a Raspberry Pi. Each of them received a microSD card and adapter, kindly contributed by the SD Association (along with SanDisk and Cardwave). The microSD card included the bootstrap software for each attendee to participate in the demo. After becoming an OSGi-enabled device the Raspberry Pi discovered the OSGi based cloud platform, Paremus Service Fabric, where ProSyst mPRM and a MQTT server were running. A Bitreactive wind farm application was dynamically installed on the OSGi enabled Raspberry Pi from the mPRM in the Cloud. Once installed the Raspberry Pi automatically joined our ‘virtual’ wind farm demo using MQTT. Having seen the wind farm demo the attendees were given the opportunity to take part in a hackathon to develop new applications to be submitted by close of play the next day. There was a great competition between attendees to develop the best application and win a brand new devolo Home Control starter kit. The winner of the hackathon was Tobiasz Dworak, System and Software Architect at the Research & Engineering Center Sp.z o.o. The OSGi IoT demo will be reused and extended for future events to include other products and additional applications. Please send us an email if you would like to get involved.

Series organized and presented by Professor Shaowen Wang, Head of the Geography and Geographic Information Science Department. "Data Science is in a golden age. The mathematical foundations of Data Science, known for many years, are now seeing broad applicability due to engineering advances in cloud and big data computing and due to the explosive availability of data about nearly every aspect of human activity coming from mobile devices, remote sensing and the Internet of Things. Nearly all of this data has components of location and time leading to stunning advances in geospatial data science. Development of intelligent systems using knowledge models leading to insights and understanding have the potential to significantly transform geospatial data sciences. To achieve the fullest extent of their potential, these innovations require establishment of open consensus standards. This talk will review recent developments in innovations, standards, and applications of geospatial data science and engineering."

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
