L20 – L23 – Independent Case Study
Your Task!
With the documentary you have just been given, you have to complete the following:
Todays lesson and next lesson (L20 – L21)
You must watch your documentary and finish for homework in preparation for L23
task (see 2 below). To complete this task efficiently you must:
1) Complete the Modes of documentary task below by giving examples of
codes (verbal, non verbal and technical) and conventions that would
conform to that particular mode – Remember: A documentary can be
more than mode!
2) Prepare a brief PowerPoint Presentation on your documentary that
engages the question below:
Do you agree that as spectators we are more likely to accept at face value what we
see and hear in documentary films?
In doing so you must refer to atleast 2 scenes from the documentary.
You should research relevant institutional information on your text and find
atleast 1 critical perspective on your text.
Extension Task:
Within your PowerPoint presentation produce a mind map of the codes and
conventions and compare these to one of the case study texts analysed already.
• Expository Mode
A strong emphasis on verbal commentary (“Voice of God”) and an
identifiable logic
• Observational Mode
Direct engagement with the everyday life of the subject(s) through an
‘Unobtrusive camera’
• Participatory Mode
Interaction between ‘Filmmaker’ and ‘Subject’ – Techniques such as
Interviews, archival footage or even direct involvement
• Performative Mode
Subject matter has a stronger emphasis on their (filmmaker/institution)
emotional and social impact on an audience
• Expository Mode • Observational Mode
• Participatory Mode • Performative Mode
