The talk was about the future of music libraries, and the their bachelor graduation projects were shown that was the result of a collaboration between the Public library in Amsterdam, and the University of Technology in Eindhoven.

At our department, the department of Industrial Design, we're educated to design intelligent systems and/or services for societal/social transformation. Where 'classical' ID engineering focusses on form-giving and technical design our departments vision is based on how human individuals/groups interact with the world, this encompasses social, physical, virtual, personal ativities. In short you could call this physical interaction design intended to make our world a better place ;) . our educational curriculum has a competency-centered approach, and part of this is that we are allowed to chose our own projects and modules.
1 min at the department we have 10 different themes, which all deal with a part of society. i.e. emotions and experiences, healthcare, automobility, playful interactions, and the theme in which the project with the library of amsterdam was formulated is discovery and learning. the projects in this theme are research-driven design, rooted in phychological theories of learning, for both children and adults, as we know that we never stop to learn. And this is why we are here, because the public libraries have as main function to facilitate learning. OUr bachelor graduation project that was initiated by the public library of amsterdam fitted this theme perfectly.
1 min as you all know: the main building of the library of amsterdam (designed by Rem Koolhaas in 2007????) clearly tries to make the transition of the function of a library that we grew up with - quiet building with just books and some reading spots - towards more open and social place for gathering, sharing, to support learning and discovery in every way. i.e. despite the physical opportunities that are incorporated in the building, the link with the virtual world, and related phenomena (i.e. advanced integrating with internet, social media, mobile computing, and other technologies) is mostly unexplored. but we are here because we got the chance to bring these worlds together for the music department of the library in the six month design project ‘ You Are Your Music’

This central position is communicated both symbolically as well as in it’s physical location within a community. Big libraries are often architectural masterpieces placed at the heart of a city. How do we justify the need for these grand buildings in an era where more and more information and content is created, searched for, bought, lend and shared virtually? The goal of the collaboration between OBA (the public library in Amsterdam) and Industrial Design (TU/e, Eindhoven) was to create future visions of library use, applied in a music recommendation system (having something to do with music recommendation was the only restriction for this project). 2 min img 2: Virtual and physical access to information nowadays coincide with little interaction between them (its the individual that connects them): found interesting subject in a particular media (paper, blog, tv show, from a friend), google subject to find titel/artist/album/publication etc, go to library, look up in the system (browsable digitally), get it, bring it home, ,not read it, extend it, forget it, in the end read it, bring it back, pay the fine ..
2 min img 3: Personal information about interest, your ‘personal’ library with items that you’ve read connects the physical and virtual: social media indexes what you encounter on the web (ie like button FB, +1 google+), these specific encounters are presented to you when you visit the library and enable you to find the specific item(s). The difference with the ‘current’ situation is that a system, and not an individual, is connecting the virtual information with the physical items. This affords learning and therefore development in a specific topic extending the reach of the library beyond its physical space.
2 min img 4: Recommendations based on your ‘personal lifestyle’ (subject driven), social browsing (find users with similar interests/content, social), reminders. the things you encounter are combined in recommendations for new subjects and items that you are invited to explore. This enables not just learning but serious exploring as well. The library space has to adapt to the this functionality by means of interactive systems. The Oba already made combinations of exhibition- spaces and bookshelves that enforces each other. based on the vistors information the library lets you experience knowledge that is found in the periphery of your interests; topics that you will never find if you use a keyword-driven search engine.
Persoonlijke oplossing: Opus 4: visie > 1 min For me learning can only arise when I am passionate about the subject at hand. That is probably because I am not very disciplined. But in order to enjoy the system that I would create for this project it was important for me that the visitor would to get involved in passionate learning instead of passive browsing that was currently the case.

The attention in Keller’s model has to come from physical cues, which relates this step of the model to the physical context of Falk & Dierking. 2. The relevance is largely determined by the culture, and the social demands and interests of different groups. This relates then to the socio-cultural domain. 3. The users’ confidence in relevant achievements has to be provided by the systems that are used for learning. Interactive systems are part of the virtual domain. 4. Although the design of the learning system can guide the satisfaction, it is very personal, and thus part of the personal domain. The quality of the satisfaction is part of the intrinsic motivation for the next learning activity, although intrinsic motivation might decrease by an extrinsic reward system. [10] Intrinsic motivation is hard to (re)establish afterwards.

People try to get focus by looking through the just-returned items, or the new items Althought people want to find new things, because A staff member is constantly present at the ‘automatic’ lending robot for assistance, and to answer impossible questions like “can you recommend something good to me?” 3. Most visitors in the OBa are alone 4. Conversation and interaction between visitors is rare Requirements: 1. Focus on the joy of use 2. Easy access 3. Not only provide browsing service, but also let the user engage in musical activity 4. Focus on educational/discovery aspects 5. Quick result, useful result 6. Slightly challenging 7. Rewarding 8. SAVANT everything in life seems to be tied up with music (being knowledgeable about music is who I am, pubquiz) ENTHUSIASTS music is a key part of their life but is balanced with other interests (enthusiasts believe that the iPod has made the world a better place) CASUALS music plays a welcome role, but other things are far more important (equally, or more, interested in the lifestyle/fashion related to the music world) INDIFFERENTS would not lose too much sleep if music ceased to exist (most of the songs they hear at parties sound unfamiliar)
10 min 2.2.3 Music as Water Music as water is proposed as a paradigm for the way we interact with music in the future by Gerd Leonhard. This is discussed in the movie ‘ Future Talks ’ with Gerd Leonhard & Glen Hiemstra [6] and the book ‘ Music 2.0: Essays by Gerd Leonhard ’ by Gerd Leonhard [16]. It describes the process of music as a product (and thus owning the physical product) moving towards music as a service (being granted access to virtual items). In a library scenario lending then becomes access for a set period of time, whilst ‘owning’ or buying in a market context becomes access forever. Some of the implications of music as water are: Mobile access to your ‘private’ music catalogue Less profit per sale, but potentially more sales Possibility to ‘buy’ only one track of an album Ubiquitous searching for new music Self-producing artists In the library context music then doesn’t need a dedicated floor anymore but it becomes the ‘plumbing’. Virtual access to the libraries archive can be executed with PC’s and mobile phones. 2.2.4 Ubiquitous Computing Computational power is becoming more and more available at the scale of our hands. Mobile phones evolve in mobile computers and with increasing wireless bandwidth they can share more and more information real time. The environments as we know them will evolve in computationally augmented spaces that add extra layers of information or resources onto the original physical attributes of the environments. The meaningfulness of these spaces are the consequences of our encounters with them [5]. Ubiquitous computing has cleared the way for, i.e. the ‘music as water’ paradigm as described before. The trend of more powerful, better connected, yet mobile computers offers me a chance to rethink the libraries physical as well as virtual space. 2.2.5. Finding new music This part of the research is user oriented and was conducted with a short questionnaire. I ask five users (Male and female, age range 21-60) the following two questions: 1. How do you find new music that you would like to lend or buy? 2. Do you often recognize a song that you would like to own without knowing the artist and/or album? Do you have any means to retrieve this information afterwards? The responses on question one ranged from radio, television, internet (youtube or specialist DJ sites), asking your boyfriend, direct mail (email from music websites), track lists from podcasts (overview from songs in a mix) and the music store. The responses on question two were divided; three users had problems with remembering the information, one answered sometimes and one answered hardly ever. If they didn’t know the information they’d try googling elements of the lyrics, wait for the song to pass by again to write the information down and asking friends and or family. The goal of this questionnaire was twofold. First, to gain insight in how users find music and if they have trouble with remembering metadata (the way to find a specific song online). And secondly, to create a baseline so I can ask them qualitative questions during the user test asking them if they prefer the way they do it right now or the way my prototype does it.
