• It limited the king’s power. It also gave
more power to the people.

• The Enlightenment was a period of time
when people started thinking more, and
meeting to discuss things like religion and
government.
• It took place in 17th and 18th centuries
• It was important because people started
thinking and wanting to make changes to
their world

• He was from France
• He is most famous for his articulation of
the theory of separation of powers

• He was from England
• He lived from 1632 to 1704
• Natural rights are rights that everyone has,
automatically (naturally). Like life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness.

• He was from Switzerland
• He lived from 1712 to1778
• The Social Contract is an intellectual device
intended to explain the appropriate
relationship between individuals and their
governments

• He was from Virginia
• He was most famous for writing the
Declaration of Independence
• He didn’t believe that “property” was a
