Along with that role comes all the challenges of being a nontraditional student. And since I've been there, done that, and earned those degrees, I thought I'd share some of the things that worked for me. Plan Ahead Planning ahead is a major key to surviving as a nontraditional student. Without learning to properly plan you are toast. Hang it up, don't waste your time, energy, or money. Planning ahead is important but, for the nontraditional student, it is the difference between success in college and flunking out. Figure Out What's Really Important If you're going to take a life that was already crammed with responsibilities and add in the major one of being a student, then you're going to have to let some stuff go by the wayside. Ask For Help with Those Things Which Need To Be Done You can... and should... not only ask, but expect, help from your spouse and children. They can help with their own laundry, the everyday chores, and cooking. Figure Out What Can Slide It's just as important to figure out what's NOT important. Resolve to Do Whatever It Takes It takes for the few years you're pursuing your higher education. You can circumvent many of those challenges by taking a proactive stance to the typical problems of nontraditional students and since I've been there, done that, and earned those degrees, I thought I'd share some of the things that worked for me. - 5. Planning will be needed in order to find time for your required reading, have time for your family, or be able to feed them something other than take-out. You'll need to plan to study for exams, set aside time to write papers, and commit time to work on projects. Without planning you won't get the house cleaned, the laundry done in a timely manner, or the grocery shopping done other than at night when all the shelves are empty from the day shoppers. Yes, planning ahead is important in life but, for the nontraditional student, it's the difference between success in college and flunking out. Figure Out What's Really Important Naturally, if you're going to take a life that was already crammed with responsibilities and add in the major one of being a student, then you're going to have to let some stuff... actually, a lot of stuff... go by the wayside. Don't worry, you'll get better at it as you make your way through the semesters to your degree. When you identify something as important… truly important… you'll make sure it gets done. - 7. Ask For Help with Those Things Which Need To Be Done You can... and should... not only ask, but expect, help from your spouse and children. They will, after all, benefit from your education. It's just as important to figure out There are probably a whole lot of things that you'll now realize... well, they just aren't worth worrying about. - 10. I put in more all-nighters than I could count. I saw so many sun rises while sitting in a Waffle House or some other all-night joint. Many times I'd watch the sun rise while working in my dining room using my laptop on the table for writing a research paper while using my desktop computer for finding relevant research papers and printing them out and having a swivel chair so I could easily access both computers simply by turning around.
